Finding Cheap Airfare

From Smart Traveler Newsletter

The major online travel agencies can help you find the least expensive air fare to get you from point A to point B.

Travelocity, Expedia and Obritz will all notify you when prices are reduced for flights that you are interested in. This is by far the easiest way to get reduced rates for air fares.

Flying mid-week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) will provide you with cheaper air fares than flying Friday through Monday which are peak flying air days.

Flying at non-peak hours (overnight)will also reduce the amount you pay for air fare.

Being very flexible about times and dates can help you find cheaper air fares, as well. Last minute cancellations can drive air fares down even on flights Friday through Monday and during daylight hours. You do, however, have to be ready to go when a cheap ticket becomes available.

Flying as an air courier is a sure fire way to save a lot of money on air fare. Courier companies will give you deeply discounted tickets in return for your allotted luggage space. You cant check any luggage, however, and must be willing to take only a carry on bag. By carefully packing you can put a lot of stuff in a carry on bag and you can always layer the clothes you are wearing.

You can always go to Priceline and try their "name your own price" option to try to find the cheapest possible air fares. You need to have done your
homework first, though, so you will know what a good deal is when you meet it. It would be terrible to find out that you had named a price higher than you could have gotten if you had just bought a ticket in the first place.

Making Hotel Reservations Online

From Smart Traveler Newsletter

The first thing you need to determine before you start trying to make hotel reservations online is the EXACT dates that you want the room or rooms for. Prices vary at all hotels. Weekend rates are higher that mid-week rates.

You will need some patience to do the required research in order to get the best possible rates. You will also need to have your credit card at hand.

More Information:
"Save 80% or more on your next vacation"

Decide what kind of hotel you want - budget, mid-price, chain, luxury, three-four-or-five-star - where, and what type of location (near an airport,
city center, attraction) before making reservations.

You need to find out what the "rack" or published rate is. This is generally the highest rate a hotel charges for a room and what people who don't know any better pay for their reservations.

Now you know better. So you can expect to play less. You can get this information be going to the web site of the hotel you are interested in and typing in the dates you wish to reserve the room for.

Now you are ready to call the hotel to make the reservations but you still need a little more information before you actually reserve the room. Within a hotel, not all rooms are alike. Some
are bigger; some have better views.

Some are on higher floors (generally a good thing, as views improve and there's less ground-level noise). Some are closer to an elevator (good if walking is a problem, bad if you want quiet). Some
have double beds versus kings. Some may be renovated and some may not be.

Ask about all these variables before making reservations.

Ask, "What is your best rate?" Pause for the answer. Then repeat: "Is that your very best rate?" Pause again. Then ask: "Are there any special packages that offer an even better deal?" By then you'll have the knowledge that you've
given it your best shot. This is the time to also ask if the hotel offers further discounts for AAA members.

Also ask if you will receive frequent flyer points or any other benefits when booking your reservations. Now ask what the cancellation policy is. You have all the information. Either book the room or keep shopping.

Thank you,

Rich Fullerton.

Good lens, pretty good tips and resources for the consumer. I have found there is no cheaper way to travel and receive perks more than being a travel agent with your own travel website. Can only wish I knew many years ago, would have saved much $$$$.
