More Paid Time Off for Employees

According to CareerJournal.com's Loretta Chao, "more employers than last year are offering at least three days of paid leave during this holiday season, but overall, paid time off during the holidays is still declining, according to a recent survey."

-Only 43% of employers will grant workers three or more days of paid leave, compared with 53% in 1994, the last time Christmas and New Year's both fell on Sundays, according to the 2005 Year-End Holiday Practices Report released this month.

-Most employers are giving two to 2 1/2 days of paid leave, with 93% giving a day off for Christmas on Monday, Dec. 26, and 79% giving a day off for New Year's on Monday, Jan. 2.

The Bureau of National Affairs Inc. (the Washington publisher of legal and regulatory information survey)conducted the survey electronically with about 200 respondents from companies of various sizes

The next time Christmas and New Year's Day both fall on Sundays will be in 2011-12; the holidays fall on Sundays in a cycle of five, six, 11 and, again, six years.
