Hi I bought lottery tickets for 5 dollars for tonight's drawings. I rarely buy one. Great to read about the lottery all the best if i win i will come back and let you know. Thanks. Anna
  • JHFSEO Mar 30, 2012 @ 9:23 am | delete
    Good luck, Anna!

Apparently, you are more likely to die from a flesh eating bacteria than to win the lottery. I'm pulling for you (to win, not get infected)!
  • Big Mike Mar 9, 2012 @ 5:41 pm | delete
Always thought if I won, I'd put the money in General Obligation Bonds in the state I live in. Currently 5% or better tax free. What do you think?
  • JHFSEO Mar 30, 2012 @ 9:21 am | delete
    Good advice!

There was a recent article (I need to find it for reference) that talks about investing the recent 500 million dollar Mega Millions. Several different bonds were mentioned, and that's probably good advice.

My shtick is just that, with enough money, you don't have to risk anything to make interest, but bonds are pretty safe, so you would earn more and have very limited risk.

Your writing is really good. Besides the drooling anticipation of learning some lottery secrets from your blog post here, I actually found comedic relief and valuable information too. Not that I expected anything different. ;-)
  • BradKamer Jan 31, 2012 @ 11:02 pm | delete
Nice lens. I only commit a few bucks per weekend to play the lotto. A small sacrifice to pay to have a weekly dream.
  • mihgasper Jan 28, 2012 @ 3:16 am | delete
Haven't won anything yet, but after this lens I am ready to win... What do you think? Should I wait some more time or should I buy a ticket?
    ;-)

If I ever win anything, I'll make sure I remember all of that...
    Good job!

You fail to mention insurance. You DO NOT want to put 10 million dollars into one single account with a bank that will only insure 100,000-250,000 of that money.
  • JHFSEO Nov 30, 2011 @ 10:13 pm | delete
    You make a good point.

As you mentioned, financial institutions insure deposited funds up to 250,000 through the FDIC for banks and the NCUA for credit unions. That's per account. Which means lots of accounts to store all of that money. Or lots of mason jars and a good map.
  • Allen w. brundage Apr 14, 2012 @ 8:52 am | delete
Na he didn't, speed reader! Lol'z
  • JHFSEO Apr 14, 2012 @ 9:46 am | delete
You make a good point. Banks and credit unions insure their accounts up to one of those two amounts. You'll have to hire a personal assistant to open and manage X accounts if you hit the jackpot.
  • DeterminedDolphin Nov 10, 2011 @ 3:29 pm | delete
Loved this lens. Winning as you say is one thing, it's the keeping it that is a whole other matter. Great advice. Thanks.

I know people that won lotto, and lost it all. Quit their jobs, drank too much. What a waste. But I know people in Australia that have actually won it twice, invested wisely and living well. Your lens is great
  • JHFSEO Oct 7, 2011 @ 6:56 pm | delete
Thank you. Won twice, eh? What's their secret?
  • Peter Jun 30, 2011 @ 2:06 am | delete
Great info. Thank you.... When I win big. I will write a book about my experience and a step by step on the process and what to do and how to handle it... No ones done that yet. I bet it will be a bestseller.....As for watches, try a Ulysee Nardin.... Woof....thats on my list when I win. My best advice would be to make a list of what you will do. And when you win, follow it to the tee..... Good luck and God bless you all....
  • JHFSEO Oct 7, 2011 @ 6:58 pm | delete
Good advice. I'm sure the lifestyle and adventures of a lottery winner would be a big hit. I'll pass on the Nardin, it's a beauty, but for that kind of money, I could get something with a clock inside it and drive it around! Thanks for coming by.

  • CruiseReady Apr 6, 2011 @ 5:26 am | delete
We used to play the Florida Lottery every week, but now we only play once every couple of months. However, if I ever did win, my plan would be to FIRST be debt free, THEN to salt a bunch of it away, and then book a few cruises.

Absolutely wonderful and inspiring - especially for those of us who not only imagine wealth, but can FEEL it - even if it's not quite here, yet. (At least that's how I feel!) I love where I live and I already have my dream home picked out (would you believe, it's less than .25 miles from where we rent right now!!), and I am already self-employed in my dream job, working less than 20 hours a week!

So, I'm all set there. Just learning how to deal gracefully and joyfully with my money BEFORE I receive it.

And your lens was perfect! : )
  • JHFSEO Oct 7, 2011 @ 7:00 pm | delete
Thank you. You sure have everything planned out. That's the key - live like you're already rich, and good things will happen. Let me know if you hit the 4.3 mil. If it turns out you're psychic, you can pick my numbers for me!

This was a fun lens. Thanks for the entertainment. Tomorrow I will know if I won :) If I do win, I will come back and tip you :) Maybe you should have a donate link incase a winner reads your page and needs to thank you for your advice :) You never know....
  • JHFSEO Jan 24, 2011 @ 7:03 pm | delete
I appreciate the offer. A donation link, whether folks win or not, is a great idea. If your winnings are burning a hole in your pocket, I'd be happy to take 1%!
  • newbizmau Oct 5, 2010 @ 10:41 pm | delete
Wow you really raised an eyebrow. I have a new perspective on the money I've got now. My current favorite affirmation: "I'm so happy and grateful that money comes to me in increasing quantities through multiple sources on a continuous basis."
  • JHFSEO Oct 6, 2010 @ 11:18 am | delete
Thanks for visiting Mau. That phrase is perfect for a tee-shirt, and it's going to be my new mantra. Pay attention, Cosmos, particularly to the happy, grateful, money, increasing, multiple and continuous parts.
  • theraggededge Sep 18, 2010 @ 4:25 pm | delete

I thought this lens was both practical and amusing. Should I ever win the lottery, I will hire you to not write the press release.

Thanks for that, you raised a lot of good points. If you really do want to know how to invest your money, take a look at this site that I found - It has some very useful information - http://bestwaytoinvestmoney.info
  • alexkazam Apr 28, 2010 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Your lens makes a valuable point- winning the lottery doesn't mean you're rich- why do i say that? Because money doesn't stay around if it's not handled well. Be financially literate to safeguard your wealth behind bars of wisdom.
  • Suzane89 Apr 20, 2010 @ 2:30 am | delete
There's thousands of people that win the lottery. You see people win the lottery for hundreds of millions, then 3 years down the road lose it all. If you want to keep your lotto earnings, then here's how you can do just that. Ways to invest money
  • Humboldt Mar 8, 2010 @ 8:50 pm | delete
Love your lens. Lotteries are a popular everywhere in the world. You should see the commercials for lotto 6/49 in Canada. If I didn't know better I'd say that you wrote them. They show people doing ridiculous things with their winnings under the tag line "because you can!"

Smart lottery winners need smart lottery strategies... some of the ones here are great (and light hearted where necessary.

I use http://www.thelotter.com as my preferred lottery resource (checking results / buying tickets) they also run an insightful blog at http://www.thelotteryblog.com... I'd be interested to see what others prefer to use

    Thanks for the feedback, all.

Good points GG. Cash settlement and similar duties are big business nowadays, and I'm sure there's quite a few people who camp out at the lottery office ready to provide their services to the recently rich.

I might write up some of those articles, but if anyone in those industries provide those services, drop a line here.
  • GG Sep 22, 2009 @ 7:08 am | delete
I note that the advice also works fairly well for anyone landing a super-lucrative job or contract, getting a large windfall/inheritance, or indeed suddenly coming into money through any one of a number of means. It's kind of a Being Rich boot camp.

Hmm. Wouldn't mind seeing a Being Rich 101 article or three. "You have the money, you're paid up and debt free - so what now? Accountants and lawyers on retainer? Concierges and specialist services? Trusts and tax structures? Philanthropy and donations?"

i love your blog it was funny but yet very useful an smart think i still dont understand why people just dont see that if they just invest some money like u said thay can always have a nive lil sum of cash u get 5 stars from me
  • Mitteemo Aug 10, 2009 @ 2:58 pm | delete
I enjoyed your blog on the lottery. I will give you five stars if I can locate where to do that. As a result of your blog, I plan to CHANGE my stategy for Powerball-Yes. I plan to play HIGHER numbers to maximize any wins. I play the same numbers for MULTIPLE PLAYS for a whole month, $2 each play, less than $20, a budgeted amount. I am leary of sending the cash payout to my LOCAL bank account, they will talk. I would be interested in how to use a lawyer and a corporate scheme to shield my IDENTITY as a winner from family, friends, and creditors. I know at least one on the Powerball site got away with doing that and I would like to do the same. I could move to another state if needed. I want to share with others, but ANONYMOUSLY. I can fudge a bit by investing in stocks and bonds and PRETENDING my money came from them instead of the lottery. They just don't need to know how much I really have. Thanks again Sorry the type is dull, no choices on this site.

well done, this is a great lense, and an interesting twist on how you could earn the cash to invest. But im glad to see you have taken the effort to speak about the importance of how to invest the money smartly, another option you could think to add is how to invest stock .. which is a great way of making extra income if you have had a massive windfall like winning the lottery!

Cool lens. Love the amount of info you added. I used to have a syndicate at work. We played for 3 years and won pretty much nothing on Powerball. But we hoped - and if we hadn't played we wouldn't have had hope. You get 5***** from me for a really nice lens.
