Looking for something other than 12-step methods?

SMART Recovery® offers free face-to-face and online mutual help groups. SMART helps people recover from all types of addictive behaviors, including: alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, and addiction to other substances and activities.

Become Familiar with SMART Recovery

SMART (Self Management And Recovery Training) is based on a Four Point Program:

o Increasing Motivation
o Coping with Urges
o Managing Problems
o Lifestyle Balance

SMART differs greatly from 12-step methods. No one will ask you to call yourself an alcoholic or addict, and sponsors are not encouraged.

If you've tried 12-step methods and found they may not be what you like, give SMART a try.

SMART meetings are intended to be educational as well as supportive. Trained volunteers (facilitators) lead SMART meetings and help SMART members learn to use the SMART 'toolbox', which is a collection of various techniques helpful in recovery.

There are no spiritual requirements at SMART, but if you are a spiritual person, that's fine too!

I hope you found this brief overview helpful as you look to find a recovery method that works for you!

I keep reading comments from so many people on how natural fluke heart attacks/deaths are for young people. Are you all crazy?? People this is serious - LOOK! http://tictacdo.com/ttd/Beat-Drug-Addiction They FOUND empty drug bottles on her nightstand. The report stated that she "purged the contents of her stomach" before dying.

Fantastic lens on SMART Recovery, an alternative to the 12 steps. Many members of my forums, The Sober Village actively spread the word about SMART offering the available cognitive tools to assist one in the recovery from alcoholism and addiction. I'm very glad to see this lens!

BTW, I'll bet there would be more ratings if it were clear how do it, what to click. A few words of explanation would be nice. It took me too long to figure it out and I almostr left without sharing my rating. Again, thank you whoever put this one together. It's a 6 star lens.

What I love about SMART Recovery, besides the warm support, is the freedom to make my own choices. When someone gets in my face and tells me to "take the cottom out of my ears and stick it in my mouth" I can't help but dig in my heels. At SMART meetings it's a rule that we let others weigh out the evidence and decide for themselves. Seeing other people doing this and succeeding helps and the all around acceptance of people as they are is the icing on the cake. It has helped me accept myself and change behaviors that get me into trouble. Thank you for putting this up and sharing the empowerment. I wish everyone could view this lense. If everyone knew about both SMART Recovery and AA, and could choose for themselves, to use one, the other or both (as many do), I'll bet there would be a lot less people caught in the addiction trap.

This is entirely a different topic comparative with the other lenses. I appreciate you for choosing a different topic.

    Keep up the good work.

It's wonderful to feel EMPOWERED, not powerless! As a Christian, I don't believe that God wants me to feel downtrodden and powerless over anything! Not even, (or especially not!), a lifetime of consuming crack, booze and pain pills. Smart Recovery has helped me learn to make the hard, but healthier choices so I can finally discover who I am, be true to myself and tap into my potential!

The meaning behind the first two letters in SMART is why I am here, Self Management. Turning myself over to a "higher power" and relying on someone to talk me out of picking up a drink, was not the answer. Smart Recovery is truly a place where YOU can deal with your addiction. Thanks to the tools and support I am not only living sober, I am living life.

Not only is SMART a great place to resolve issues with addictive behaviors - I was able to look at the issues underlying why I became dependent on mind altering substances to begin with. And met some of the kindest people and developed some tools that I can use to handle upset. To sum up SMART in one word? I would say EMPOWERING! Check it out!

Effective resources and warm people characterize this organization. SMART Recovery is a breath of fresh air for folks who seek to make changes in their lives. I've been a member for more than a year and would recommend this site and these techniques to anyone seeking an alternative to 12-step groups.
