An Introduction to Smash Mouth
Smash mouth is one of my favorite bands, not only for their music, but with a little sentimental value. The first album I've ever owned was their first album, Fush Yu Mang, several year ago when I was still in elementary school. The band was started in San Jose, California with Steve Harwell (vocals), Greg Camp (guitar), Paul De Listle (bass), and Kevin Coleman (drums). You can tell pretty quick by listening to a couple of their songs that it has a strong 60's influence combined with a third wave ska style, giving the band a unique sound which has brought them through the years.
Band Background
How Smash Mouth Began
The band formed in 1994 when Steve Harwell and Kevin Coleman started jamming together. Later They asked Greg Camp to start playing with them, and Paul De Listle, a friend of Greg's started playing with them shortly after. The reason for their music sounding like so many different styles is do to the fact that they never wanted to be labeled any one kind of music. Instead they focused on not being labeled and just wrote music that made them feel good, and felt good to play. After recording a couple of demos in Greg's bedroom, which resulted in Greg being evicted from his apartment due to neighbors complaining, Eric Valentine heard some of their music and liked it. Eric helped them record a two song demo and took it to the KOME radio station in San Jose. One of the DJs fell in love with their song "Nervous in the Alley" and kept playing it. Soon enough people were calling in asking where they could get the song which wasn't yet available as it was just a demo.
The demo was such a hit that the band Smash Mouth was soon asked to play a summer show by KOME alongside with Beck, 311, and No Doubt, all rising 90's bands. This was a huge leap from playing small club gigs, and the band was excited as well as nervous to take the jump. Shortly after the show Interscope Records signed them for a two album contract.

Smash Mouth Will Eat Eggs
In recent news about Smash Mouth, I discovered something that made me laugh in a cheerful manner. An author from the Something Awful forums said they would give Smash Mouth $20 if Smash Mouth would eat 24 eggs. This was posted on June 24, 2011.
Somewhere along the lines this was tweeted to Smash Mouth, and what began as an internet meme grew quickly as more people started to to offer up money if Smash Mouth would eat the eggs. In July, Smash Mouth took the opportunity and agreed they would do it if the fans could raise $10,000 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The fans reached this goal just less than a weeks amount of time.
Steve Harwell (lead vocals) is to eat the eggs on camera and post the video up on youtube. That's one way to raise money.
Harwell wanted his friend and celebrity chef Guy Fieri to cook the eggs for him. Fieri said he would do it, if the fans could get the donations up to $25,000. They may have pushed the envelope a little with extended the amount and creating more of a delay, but the donations were raised with the help of this internet meme and the fans.
The video of Harwell and Fieri cooking and eating the eggs on video in front of an audience. During the event the rule was made that if Harwell couldn't eat the eggs and had to call in support, he would have to donate $1,000 to the cause and Fieri agreed to match him per $1,000. In the end a total of $15,000 was raised and donated to St. Jude's for this cause.

Summer Girl
This fifth album was released in 2006. It was originally intended to be titled Old Habits and sound much like their old ska-punk from their first two albums. The release was initially delayed several times due to attempts to get publicity about the record out. When this didn't quite go as hoped the band returned to the studio determined to make the album better. What resulted was mixed tracks from previous songs and new songs all together. The Old Habits record was shelfed and Summer Girl was released. Also before the release of Summer Girl the band's drummer, Michael Urbano, left without warning on February 14, 2006, because of creative differences. The band found Jason Sutter to fill the spot, best known for his work with American Hi-Fi and The Rembrandts. The album was finally released, but in early 2007 Jason Sutter left Smash Mouth to play drums for Chris Cornell. Mitch Marine returned to the band as drummer.
