Smashwords is a publisher and distributor of ebooks in all formats, with a massive secondary distribution network across many stores including Apple and Barnes and Noble. It is free to use, making it an affordable way to generate and release ebooks to a wide audience.

What is Smashwords?

Smashwords ebook publishing and distribution

Smashwords - the Write StuffSmashwords is a ebook publisher and distributor. They make money from sales only, so it is free to upload your books, making publishing more accessible. They also offer a huge range of formats including Sony, Kindle, Nook and more. There is even a basic "read online" format. Better yet for small scale or self-publishers, they offer a free ISBN option, making tracking your book and getting it onto official lists far easier.

As well as this basic service, they also offer Premium Distribution. While still free, this means your book has to pass a manual quality check. If it does, they distribute it to Smashwords' partner stores - Barnes and Noble, Apple, Sony, Diesel and others - putting it in front of a wide audience. This distribution service is why many small press publishers have accounts, something I will discuss later.

Smashwords Advantages for Readers

If you buy a book on Smashwords, you can get it in any format it is available in. If you trade your e-reader for a different type you can re-download it. Forgot the book you need for a meeting? Login and download it at work in PDF.
Also Smashwords books do not have DRM.

Example ebooks - Fiction and non-fiction

Different styles and layouts.

There are two suggested styles for Smashwords, one for fiction which usually uses paragraph indent and one for non-fiction which leaves spaces between non-indented paragraphs.

Both of these ebooks are free, and safe for children, so I am using them as examples. They are available in most formats, and both qualified for premium distribution. It does highlight one thing however: ebboks on Smashwords have to be readable in every format. They do not have to look that same. For example, headers and pagination will change depending on format and device. The other thing to remember is that the readonline and RTF versions are both very, very, basic.

Smashwords Advantages for authors

- Smashwords use Paypal for payments, making it simple and cheap to receive royalties
- it combines all sales and pays out at $10
- Having all the royalties in one place makes accounting and tax easier

Getting your book on Smashwords

Formatting your book for Smashwords

Smashwords - Save a tree Publish OnlineThis is a three stage process:

  1. Create your word file
  2. Upload it to Smashwords
  3. They automatically convert it to multiple files (using their "Meatgrinder" program)

Is it that simple? Yes and No. The Word file you create needs to be a .doc, not .docx, and the formating you can use is limited because the file will be converted into so many different formats. To make this easier Smashwords has a style guide that explains the whole process and a few things to avoid.

If all you want is your book on Smashwords itself though, this is pretty much it.

A Smashwords Secret Weapon

Word Versions for formatting

The file formatting to get your into Smashwords properly can be tricky, particularly with current versions of Word which prefer .docx and may add extra formatting that Meatgrinder has trouble with. Some users process their files through Open Office or Libra Office, but even then the results can be erratic. I resorted to using my old version of Word, Word 2000, to process all my Smashwords files and now rarely have problems. Other users have used Word XP for similar reasons.

A useful product for serious Smashwords users as it has native.doc support and produces files that work well with Meatgrinder.

Important!

Keep it simple!

There is a catch: Smashwords formating is very basic. For example, using the two titles above, the fiction ebook indents all paragraph starts, because creating specific styles to avoid indenting produced odd text effects. Likewise, in the non-fiction example, although the ebook subheadings look alright on Kindle and epub, they lose some of the formatting in HTML. keep your formatting to a minimum.

(Using tables, images, etc. are explained in the Smashwords style guide)

A Massive Distribution Network

Premium Distribution

One of Smashwords' advantages is that it can get you access to a wide range of markets, including those you would usually be unable to get your books into. For example, it is one of the few ways authors outside the US can get books listed in Barnes and Noble, and their tie-up with Kobo has become more important in the UK since Kobo now supply all WHSmiths ebooks.

To get access to premium distribution, the book needs to be well-formated (particularly in ePub format) and will be manually checked before submission. If it fails you get an error message. If it passes, you get access to a very wide distribution network. Smashwords' other big advantage is that it aggregates all the royalties from these channels, so you only have to make $10 in total across all channels to get a payout.

There are a lot of users who now work through Smashwords. Here are publicly available video reviews from some of the other users, provided on a feed from Youtube.

There are a lot of authors and publishers who regard it as essential to publishing an ebook, not just for its sheer reach.

For Publishers

Publishers with multiple authors

Smashwords - the Write Stuff

Not just used by self-publishers, Smashwords also has publishers with accounts on there. Publisher accounts are more complicated, as several author accounts may be held under the publisher's umbrella. Authors who already have their own account can assign books to their publisher, or publishers can manage the entire author account as a "ghost" or sub-account for less technically savvy authors.

The advantages are obvious for tax as only one EIN or ITIN is needed by users outside the US. Also, having all royalties in one place makes accounting a lot simpler for a company.

An affiliate scheme

Make money by selling other people's ebooks.

If you have a Smashwords account, you can earn money by advertising other people's books through their affiliate scheme. Accessible through the Affiliates link in the footer, the scheme has two halves. Affiliates can browse participating books and create links to any page of the site just by appending their referrals link. Authors and publishers can opt their books in (or out) and change a percentage they will pay to affiliate sales.

The minimum percentage for an affiliate sale is 11% of net price, but the book owner may choose to up this by contributing part of their own royalties.

The link below demonstrates a standard 11% referral URL.
