Nightmares and Pleasant Dreams

To sleep well is one thing, but to sleep well with pleasant dreams is another. We had impressions and certain theories of what causes nightmares and pleasant dreams. Is it related to stress? Is it related to the day we had? Or is it caused by something internal? We even often get to believe that thinking of happy thoughts before we doze off will probably result in pleasant dreams. According to scientists, this isn't the case.

What Scientists Have Found Out

Tapping into this once unknown realm of sleep, scientists have made some studies on what factors controls dreams. And unlike what some people might think, snoring does not cause nightmares. According to Michael Schredl's investigation on the correlation of snoring on nightmares, breathing pauses and not snoring causes the frequency of the occurrence of nightmares during sleep.

Dreaming is also believed to incorporate external sounds. People often dream of sounds that are present externally, like the sound of an alarm clock, but this is not the case when it comes to exposure to smell.

A different study found out that exposure to pleasant smells could produce more pleasant dreams. Subjects were exposed to an odor similar to those in roses and another that's similar to rotten eggs in different varying strengths. The result, their dreams relate to the magnitude and the type of scent they are exposed to. The subjects did not recall any instance of the scent in their dreams.

This suggests one thing. According to them, the brain translates smell differently than sound during dreams. Although the resulting dreams did happen to contain certain activities associating smell, but the specific smell they were exposed to was never present in the dreams.

Using Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the answer to having pleasant sleeps, and pleasant dreams.

There are different ways you can enjoy aromatherapy. Before going to sleep, you could use a soak in the tub with aromatherapy bath salts. This way, your body feels relaxed making it easier for you to sleep at the same time making you smell good thus allowing you to foster pleasant dreams.

An alternative to this would be lighting a few aromatic candles before sleeping. This will add a different ambiance to the room thus giving you a better dream.

Whoah... I didn't know that.. Can smell really affect someone's dream? This must mean that if one has not taken a bath for a few days, eventually he/she will get nightmares.. This is an interesting lens..!
