In physiology, a smile is a facial expression formed by flexing those muscles most notably near both ends of the mouth. The smile can also be found around the eyes (See 'Duchenne smile' below). Among humans, it is customarily an expression denoting pleasure, happiness, or amusement, but can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety, in which case it can be known as a grimace. There is much evidence that smiling is a normal reaction to certain stimuli as it occurs regardless of culture. Happiness is most often the motivating cause of a smile. Among animals, the exposure of teeth, which may bear a resemblance to a smile, is often used as a threat or warning display - known as a snarl - or a sign of submission. In chimpanzees, it can also be a sign of fear. The study of smiles is a part of gelotology, psychology, and linguistics, comprising various theories of affect, humor, and laughter (Freitas-Magalhaes, 2006).

Well, that is the definition of a smile. Sounds a little technical for me. I just know I love a good smile. My granddaughter, Marissa Lorraine, loves to give one. She loves the digital camera. When I take her pic she runs over to see the visual on the camera. I hope she never looses her want to give or receive a smile! How about you?

Smiley

I

love this little guy. I can relate. My maiden name is Smiley. When I was a kid I always got teased. They would say,
smile!
Or, why aren't you smiling? I wish we would have had the happy face around then.

The very earliest known examples of the graphic are attributed to Harvey Ball, a commercial artist in Worcester, Massachusetts. He devised the face in 1963 for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company, which wanted an internal campaign to improve employee morale.[1][2] Ball never attempted to use, promote or trademark the image; it fell into the public domain in the United States before that could be accomplished.[3] As a result, Ball never made any profit for the iconic image beyond his initial $45 fee. Also in 1963, a children's cartoon series titled "The Funny Company" began airing on television, which also featured a version of the smiley on the caps worn by the animated children.

Smiley Lore :-)

Smiley Lore :-)
Scott E. Fahlman

A lot of people have asked me about this, so I thought I'd put the information here, linked under my home page:

Yes, I am the inventor of the sideways "smiley face" (sometimes called an "emoticon") that is commonly used in E-mail, chat, and newsgroup posts. Or at least I'm one of the inventors.

By the early 1980's, the Computer Science community at Carnegie Mellon was making heavy use of online bulletin boards or "bboards". These were a precursor of today's newsgroups, and they were an important social mechanism in the department - a place where faculty, staff, and students could discuss the weighty matters of the day on an equal footing. Many of the posts were serious: talk announcements, requests for information, and things like "I've just found a ring in the fifth-floor men's room. Who does it belong to?" Other posts discussed topics of general interest, ranging from politics to abortion to campus parking to keyboard layout (in increasing order of passion). Even in those days, extended "flame wars" were common.

Smile because it's contagious

Smileboy3
Smile because it's contagious
Smile because it's healing
Smile because it makes people wonder
What you're thinking.

Smile innocently to hide the guilt
Smile mischievously to make others skeptic.
Smile lovingly to butter up the retaliator
Smile dreamingly to make others lovesick.

Smile because it's raining
Smile because you're tickled.
Smile because you're happy
Smile because you're idle.

Smile affectionately to show your love
Smile smugly as you've done your work.
Smile pleadingly to get what you want
Smile forgivingly to pardon the jerk.

Smile because you're confused
Smile because you're lost without a plan.
Smile because you want to
And smile just because you can!

It's a laughter filled night that is aimed at true fans of comedy, fans who want to see the best acts currently performing in the UK (Award winning acts you might see on TV shows like Mock the Week and Have I got News for You or at The Edinburgh Festival) and the regions top talent - it's not a setting for large groups who see comedy as secondary to getting drunk (Stags / Hens / Xmas Parties etc).
