Make Smoke Bombs

You only need two ingredients to make your own smoke bombs. Smoke bombs are an easy science project, plus they produce spectacular results. You light the smoke bombs on fire in order to get them started, so this is a project that requires adult supervision.

Safe Non-Cook Smoke Bomb Recipe

There is more than one way to make a smoke bomb. This non-cook smoke bomb recipe doesn't involve any cooking, so there isn't any risk of accidentally igniting the smoke bomb while making it.


Smoke Bomb Ingredients


  • sugar
  • potassium nitrate

The sugar is just ordinary table sugar that you would use for cooking. Potassium nitrate is also known as saltpeter. It can be purchased online or you may be able to find it in garden supply stores sold as stump remover.


Make the Smoke Bomb


  1. Mix together 3 tablespoons potassium nitrate and 2 tablespoons sugar..

  2. Stir in just enough water to make a thick paste. Stir until the ingredients are evenly mixed.

  3. Spoon small balls of the smoke bomb mixture onto a piece of waxed paper or aluminum foil.

  4. Allow 1-2 days for the smoke bombs to dry completely..

  5. Take the completed smoke bombs outdoors and light them by applying the flame from a lighter.
