Are Taxes For Smokers Only?

Americans have been fighters since the beginning! We could spend days citing examples of Americans fighting for their rights. But, for some reason the smokers in America and the rest of the world have decided to roll over and play dead when it comes to their rights!

Recent years have seen an insurgence of groups who have decided that they should be able to control what the rest of us do! Putting a stop to smoking is just one of their ways to get the rest of us to conform to their way of life.

In the beginning, smokers didn't stand up to be counted because they thought that it was a big joke and that the move to control smoking would never get anywhere. With little or no opposition, the movement gained strength until today smokers are treated like criminals.

These groups have persuaded more and more people that the reason to ban smoking is for the purpose of improving everyones health. Yet these same groups ignore many other "health threats" because these other "health threats" would effect their own lives.

Smokers! It's time to stand up for your rights!

Making Children Cry!

Some of those who would force you to quit smoking are going to extremes!

There is a video being shown in New York, or I should say the world now that the media has picked up on it. This video shows a small child alone in an airport terminal crying. The message is suppose to make smokers realize that if they keep smoking, their own kids might end up alone.

The controversy over this video is the idea that non-smokers are so set on forcing their ideas onto the rest of us that they don't mind exploiting children to do it!

A person interviewed on television this morning, defended the right to make children cry if it caused a handfull of smokers to quit. Ridiculous!

There is no excuse for exploiting children! If you tried something such as this with your own children, you would be arrested for "child abuse"!

I urge every one of you (smokers and non-smokers alike) to voice your opinion and have the makers of this video charged with child abuse. If they are not punished, it's hard to imagine what they might do next!

Please take our poll below and contact your local elected officials to force them into investigating this video!

How Do You Feel About Exploiting Children?

Are you OK with making children cry to make a point?

No! The people involved in this video should be charged with child abuse!

jimpool says:

NO!

papawu says:

These people are seriously heinous.

JerryB says:

I know many people are against smoking but it is no excuse for intentionally abusing a child by making him cry like they did in this video. They should be charged with child abuse!

Yes! If it makes the point, it's worth it!

Follow Me As I Try Quitting!

3/25/08

OK! I promised my wife that I would give it a try and quit when she did. We picked April 1st as our day to quit. I'm not sure if it being April Fools Day had anything to do with it or not.

I got some Commit lozenges to help me, and she decided to try the patches.

Well so far, so good! Today is the thirteenth and neither one of us has had a cigarette yet.

To tell the truth, it hasn't been as hard as I thought it would. Sure, I find myself reaching for one every once in a while but that wouldn't be too unusual since I've been smoking since I was fourteen. For any of you that can't count, that means that I've been smoking for fifty years.

The Commit lozenges must work for the need for nicotine because when I get the urge, I pop one of those in my mouth and the urge goes away. I'll admit that I would still enjoy sitting back and having a smoke, but like I said, the urge is not nearly as strong as I thought it was going to be.

I don't think that my wife thinks that it's that easy though. It's quite often that she says that she'd sure love to have a smoke.

I'm not giving up smoking because I'm caving in to all of those anti-smoking nuts. And I don't think that my health is going to improve any because of it. As a matter of fact, I strongly believe that most of those who get lung cancer get it four or five years after they quit.

No, the real reason that I decided to quit was to prove to myself that I could. Who knows, I might start again in six months if I feel that I've proven to myself that I can.

I promise never to be like all of the non-smokers or like the ones who have quit and want to force everyone else too. I believe that noone should try to force their beliefs on to anyone else.

And let's face it, all of these people who are trying to force you to quit are just a bunch of hypocrites anyway. If they weren't, they would be trying to ban automobiles, factories, hog farms and everything else that polutes the air.

Ever follow a semi and watch the black smoke coming out of their pipes? How many packs of cigarettes would it take to equal the smoke that they put out in five minutes?

Anyway, stay tuned and I'll keep you filled in on how I'm doing. I've got my six month checkup at the VA tomarrow so we'll see if they can tell that I gave up smoking. Bet not!

Illinois Smoking Ban Being Revised!

On January 1, Illinois banned smoking in all public places, including restaurants, bars, and music venues. The Smoke-Free Illinois Act establishes fines of up to $250 for individuals and $2,500 for businesses that violate the ban, which includes smoking up to 15 feet away from doors and windows of establishments.

But maybe smokers are finally starting to fight back because Illinois Governor Blagojevich signs bill revising smoking ban.

Anti-smoking advocates were not happy when Blagojevich said he was "grappling" with making a decision on the legislation, citing economic concerns of bar and restaurant owners who feared smokers would simply stay home if not allowed to light up.

Blagojevich spokeswoman, Rebecca Rausch said that "Ultimately, the governor felt it was important that local governments have the choice."

Smokers can finally chalk one up for their side. Maybe this will give smokers the backbone to start to stand up and be counted.

The Bogus 'Science' of Secondhand Smoke

A report by Gio Batta Gori refuting hazard studies on secondhand smoke.

Gio Batta Goris' studies show that the many "reports" on the effects of secondhand smoke are mainly one-sided and biased. While he does not dispute that secondhand smoke is unhealthy, he shows that the studies are exagerated and not scientific.

Gio Batta Gori, an epidemiologist and toxicologist, is a fellow of the Health Policy Center in Bethesda. He is a former deputy director of the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Cause and Prevention, and he received the U.S. Public Health Service Superior Service Award in 1976 for his efforts to define less hazardous cigarettes. Gori's article "The Surgeon General's Doctored Opinion" will appear in the spring issue of the Cato Institute's Regulation Magazine.

An extract:

"Some prominent anti-smokers have been quietly forthcoming on what "the science" does and does not show. Asked to quantify secondhand smoke risks at a 2006 hearing at the UK House of Lords, Oxford epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto, a leader of the secondhand smoke crusade, replied, "I am sorry not to be more helpful; you want numbers and I could give you numbers..., but what does one make of them? ...These hazards cannot be directly measured."

Would You Fight If ----

They passed the motorcycle helmet law in Iowa some years back and enough of you bikers fought it that they took it off the books. Now Illinois is trying to pass the same law and you bikers are fighting it again. Why not fight the tobacco taxes like you fight the helmet laws?

Now they are working at outlawing using your cell phone while driving. Are you going to fight that one?

What does it take to get you to fight?

Will you fight the motorcycle helmet laws? Why?

Will you fight the cell phone bans? Why?

Smokers Should File Lawsuits!

Smokers should ban together and file class action lawsuits against local, state and federal governments for discrimination due to the taxes and bans imposed on them.

These taxes and bans have been imposed on smokers(a minority group), because of unscientific studies done by groups who are biased and unable to directly measure the health risks of secondhand smoke.

As quoted above, Oxford epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto, a leader of the secondhand smoke crusade, replied, "I am sorry not to be more helpful; you want numbers and I could give you numbers..., but what does one make of them? ...These hazards cannot be directly measured."

The smoking bans and taxes imposed on smokers are as discriminatory as any of the illegal discriminations directed at others due to race or religion and should be treated as such.

If bans and taxes are allowed to stand against smoking, using the supposed dangers to ones self and others as a basis for their existance, then there should also be bans and taxes on other "dangerous" activities such as:

Drinking
Use of cell phones in vehicles
Eating or drinking while driving
Driving while tired
Operating fume emitting vehicles at all
Factories that emit fumes
Working in these factories
Welding
Painting
Farming

The list goes on and on. It would be impossible to ban or tax everything that we do in our everyday lives that pose a dangerous threat to ourselves or our neighbors! But in not doing so, smokers are being discriminated against. And as a minority that is being discriminated against, should be able to win any such lawsuit.

It is surprising that none of the "class action" lawyers that you see advertising on tv haven't jumped on this already. Government agencies should prepare themselves for the onslaught!

Other Causes Of Lung Problems!

Your popcorn could be your problem!

You non-smokers won't want to hear this, but once again something besides smoking is in the news for causing lung problems.

The butter flavoring that is used on microwave popcorn has been proven to cause lung problems in factory workers where it is made and is all but proven to have caused lung problems for heavy users.

Apparently fumes from the butter flavoring gets in your lungs and reduces lung capacities much like cigarette smoke does.

The non-smokers and the government are quick to jump on the problems caused from smoking because they dislike the smell and it's a popular way to raise tax money. But, maybe this newly released information that something as seemingly harmless as fumes from your popcorn can be deadly will cause people to at least look to other sources for their problems.

Just think for one minute! If popcorn fumes can be so dangerous, how many other "seemingly innocent" items that we use daily can be making us sick?

You can read the news release here! And here!

Outlaw Smoking In Your Home?

I was just reading an article in the Golden View that stated that even smokers who go outside to smoke are carrying the dangerous chemical "cotinine" back into the home where it can harm children.

Non-smokers have gotten smoking baned from just about every place that we go, and now they are starting to work at getting it baned from our cars and even our homes.

It is a "fact" that cotinine only remains in the blood between 48 and 96 hours.

It is also a "fact" that there is some research being done on the effects of cotinine on memory and
cognition. Some studies have suggested that cotinine
(as well as nicotine) improves memory and prevents
neuron death. For this reason it has been studied for effectiveness in treating schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Research shows that the chemical that has addicted
millions to smoking has a powerful impact on brain
activity in patients who suffer from psychiatric and
degenerative disorders.

It is also a "fact" that some experiments have shown
that nicotine can slow down the onset of Parkinson's
symptoms; others have had revealed its power in
curtailing the hallucinations of schizophrenics.

It doesn't really matter if you smoke, if you want to quit smoking or even if you hate being around smokers! If you believe in our American values and your freedom, you had better start speaking up against these people who are stripping our freedoms away.

Look around you! How many of the things that you did growing up are now being stripped away?

Smokers Need To Vote Republican!

I'm starting a campaign right here to urge all smokers to let their Democratic presidential candidates, senators and representatives know that you are considering voting republican in the next election!

Why? Because democrats from across the country are pushing for higher cigarette taxes both at the state level and at the federal level without regard to the effects these higher taxes have on lower income, middle class and seniors.

Lower income, middle class and seniors make up the majority of smokers and will be the ones who are hurt because of these taxes.

We have laws against discrimination and these new taxes should be considered discriminatory because they are directed towards affecting the minority.

If the Democrats loose the smokers vote, they can pretty much figure on loosing the election! Start fighting back now!

If You Want To Quit

If you want to quit smoking we'll try to assist with ways to help you! But, don't quit just because others are trying to force you too! Quit because you want to!

If you want to quit because you feel that your health will improve, that's fine. They tell you that your lungs will start to repair themselves just days after you have quit smoking. Yet doctors will site smoking as the "cause of death" for people who have not smoked in twenty years.

If smoking was the "cause of death" for someone who quit twenty years ago, it would seem to me that quitting for health reasons would be a little futile.

Death From Smoking Is Grossly Exagerated!

Perhaps the biggest cause for deaths from smoking being exagerated is our doctors!

We all know that any group can slant statistics to favor their point of view. You can write up a poll and get people to answer the questions the way you want them to just by changing one or two words. And even though we have learned to attach some doubt to polls, we all want to believe that our doctors are being truthful.

Today, with every health issue being blamed on smoking, doctors find it easy to write down that death was caused by lung cancer or heart attack brought on by smoking. It's a lot easier then finding the true cause of that heart attack or lung cancer!

If you don't believe it, do a little research on your own. Find a death of a smoker where the doctor does not claim that it was related to smoking. It doesn't matter if the person who died was thirty-five or eighty-five! If that person smoked, his death was related to his smoking.

It's almost funny to hear someone who is eighty years old, tell me that their doctor told them to quit smoking or it was going to end up killing them.

I knew a guy who died at fifty-eight years old. He spent his whole life welding and had never smoked a cigarette. However he did chew tobacco. When he died the doctor told his wife that his lungs were as black as coal from chewing. I guess the fact that he had spent thirty odd years welding hadn't affected his lungs at all!

Maybe it's time that we expected our doctors to do what we pay them for. Find the real causes of our illnesses and quit using cigarettes as an easy out. After all, we pay them enough to get the truth!

Excellent page! Covers a lot of aspects of the issue that I had not been aware of.

I've started growing my own tobacco at home for a couple of reasons...
    1. The high cost of cigarettes, due to increasing taxes. Cigarettes have nearly doubled in price in less than a year, and another big increase ($1 per pack) coming next month.
    2. Avoid the nasty, dangerous chemicals Big Tobacco is putting in our tobacco products.

Also, I figure there may come a time when tobacco products will be difficult, if not impossible to obtain...! If I grow my own, no problem!

Well I had to reply to your poll down here because either way you answer the question you are admitting that it was child abuse. I saw the commercial and do not believe that it was child abuse at all. Posted my lengthy comments why in the squidu forum. Not enough room here.

Smoking is harmful and I am a smoker who keeps harming himself with it, such is addiction. Should I be allowed to submit others to it, no I do not think so. It is disgusting, harmful and stinks... I can see why non-smokers want us outside and away from any doors!

Unfair taxation? Yes I agree. On top of all of the other "luxury taxes" that are already imposed, there should be one more tax. A tax on stupid people. From my daily observations that would solve our economic problems in about 2 days. BTW the stupid people comment is not directed at the author of this lens nor at any of the commenters. It is just my daily observations. A bunch of stupid people out there!

This is very scary - and the fact that people do not realize how scary it is, scares me even more. Believe me, if the government can control your right to smoke, the more legislation will be on the way to govern how many children you can have, how many /if any vitamins you can take, and how much you can eat in a restaurant. Imagine a government issued card that tracks your food intake and declares what you can and cannot order to eat in a restaurant! Thank you for this lens. I needed to vent. Our county just passed anti-smoking legislation - no more smoking in any building (but, it carefully states, your own home is not effected by this legislation.) If that doesn't scare you, nothing will!

They'll make it up by raising taxes on car registration, property taxes and gas taxes like they have here. Though the didn't realize it at the time, the non-smokers who pushed for the smoking bans are now paying for voting them in.
