About Smokey Quartz
Smoky or Smokey Quartz is a brown to black version of quartz. The smoky color results from free silicon, which is formed from silicon dioxide through natural irradiation. A variety of Smoky Quartz is Cairngorm, found in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. Normally a smokey yellow-brown color, it can also be a grey-brown. It's often used in Scottish jewelry and as a decoration on kilt pins and handles of sgian dubhs (small, singled-edged knives).
