It's always wonderful to hear from other writers - whatever stage in your writing experiences you are at.

I used to struggle and wonder if I would ever get published at all - and now I'm doing it every day, full time.

Although I am always updating this lens (pretty much every day when I can) if there is anything else you'd like to see here, let me know and I'll do the best I can. Thanks for visiting!

Thanks for the info. Question: How can you write 450 words in 15 minutes? Don't you have to do some kind of research before writing an article for a client?

Thanks for the excellent lens. Highly informative.

Making money online is not easy but not impossible also. Any newcomer in this field should consider few things before starting, are you smart in online, Do you have patience & passion on it & can you work hard? if all yes, please start fast, you will grow slowly but steadily.

My lens on this topic is Best Ways of Online Money Making... interested readers can check it.

But one thing is pretty obvious; your money will start to coming slowly, but if you can build good reputation, you will earn more in every month. Good luck all.

Please do NOT use "real writing jobs dot com" as they are a scam and spam site. Just be aware of such sites that you have to pay for. They have a trial payment from credit card but they do not cancel when asked. Its a scam site. Thought I better let you all know as I saw a link on this page, sending you straight to their front door.

Hi Allison - a great lens and thanks for it, but be aware that 'gofreelance' is getting bad reviews elsewhere on the web - I'm a freelancer but would never pay anyone $50 to 'be on their books'. I've signed up for their list anyway I might even give the trial a go and I'll see what happens

This is a great lens, packed with very good and useful information. I've received a lot of offers to ghostwrite from people who have read my work but it's usually a lengthy project and not usually work I can take on just due to time pressures. And then, too, sometimes it's offers from people who "have a marvelous idea" and "if I'll just do the research, write and edit the book, proofread the work, find an agent and publisher, type the whole thing, market it, get it published, deal with the contracts, and so on then we'll split the costs and both make a mint." :). Anyway, this is a marvelous lens that looks helpful with ghostwriting as well as other opportunities. I don't have time to read it tonight but I've put it as one of my favorites so I can read it more carefully later on.

Excellent lens, Allison! I've been writing for associated content and other online sites for a while and have found that the key to high earnings is treating your writing as a business. If you view your time as valuable, and focus on making your writing process as efficient as possible, you can come out ahead. I love your tip about calculating your hourly income in terms of articles-per-hour; small payments can add up so quickly if you can write quickly and focus on high-paying niches. Some industries, such as freelance technical writing are simply more lucrative because there is less competition and a greater commercial need. Like you say, it's about getting past the point where you wonder whether you will be published and reaching the point to where you value your work and time. Thanks so much for sharing these tips!

I was an avid writer on Helium until I joined Squidoo and became thoroughly engaged in the creative colorful aspect of presenting articles. I still visit Helium and make the occasional post - and I try my best to keep up with the rating (when my Internet connection is not too slow to get access to the site) but I'm making headway in Squidoo, which is great.

Right now, my largest concern is trying to get my name established and there are already a few people who write most everything I publish - so that's a wonderful start. I'm almost afraid to take the step to become more heavily involved in writing because I want the luxury of being able to spend time with my children, as I desire, without becoming overwhelmed by so much occurring all at once.

A most engaging lens and you provide an excellent resource.

It may be time for you to check out Angel Blessings.

Hello Allison, Coral again! So far I have 10 articles on helium, it is a bit adictive. and I have one lens so far and two more in the making on here! Think I need to change the tiltle or something as so far traffic is so so slow zzzzzzzz!
But I shall keep trying, hopefully I shall find the right recipe for success soon. Did say a thanks to you on there though, after all had i not read your article in the first place, I would not be here. So Ta !

Good lens. Have just started on my new career as a freelance writer. Did get my first job but then guy got very difficult and pulled the plug - approved article, then said not good enough, then got rude and horrid. But its exciting to look for and apply for jobs. I focus mainly on travel writing and property investment as this is where my knowledge and interest lies. Craigslist is also good for finding freelance writing jobs.

Great lens, Allison. Since I'm working on a ghostwriting lens, I found your lens. Actually, I found it by looking at a group I just joined which you're a memeber of too. Just thought I'd drop in and say hi.

Oh, and Gary, don't be discouraged. Allison is right, if you work on your skills, build up experience and a reputation, you can make a lot more than $2.50 an article. I would starve otherwise!

Thanks so much! I've been apprehensive about looking for writing jobs online, but I think you gave me the push that I needed :-)
  • Allison_Whitehead Nov 23, 2008 @ 8:00 am | in reply to GarySpeer | delete
I know what you mean Gary. There are jobs out there that are woefully badly paid. But there are also a lot that are paid well, and you have to keep looking and working until you find them.

If you set higher standards and your quality of work is good, you WILL be able to cut through the low paid work and find something better.
  • GarySpeer Nov 17, 2008 @ 8:49 pm | delete
I've bookmarked your lens to explore later when I have more time, but I wanted to leave a quick note to say thanks for the information here.

And I must add this: Online article writing is discouragingly under-paid. That's not really related to your lens, just an observation from clicking on some of the links and seeing job offers such as the one for 10 articles, 500 words each for $2.50. Way back in the days of the old pulp fiction mags, the word rates were better!

Guess some folks out there are willing to sell themselves cheap to a lot of other folks willing to pay slave labor and too ignorant to understand the "quality" they're getting for such low pay. Ugh!
  • Allison_Whitehead Nov 10, 2008 @ 2:50 am | in reply to neena | delete
Hi Neena, in reply to your question the one thing you need to do is to persevere. I spent several weeks trying to grab my first freelance job, and it was really just the case of keeping going until it happened.

I just decided I would do it and I wouldn't stop until I got my first job! I ended up focusing on some of the classified ad websites and forums mentioned earlier on in this lens. The one thing you should remember is that some writers get more success on some sites than on others. Have you tried elance.com or guru.com? They are very similar to GetAFreelancer but you may have more success there.

Not everyone finds success in the same way - but I would encourage you to keep going! Good luck.
  • neena Nov 3, 2008 @ 4:38 pm | delete
    Hi Ali,

What is the secret of getting jobs on GAF? I have applied to 20-30 jobs already in my niche area and yet I don't seem to get a single reply back. Obviously I don't quote the cheapest but do keep my bid somewhere in between and provide good related samples on the PMB and yet nothing has come up yet. If you can tell me what is the right way to bag a job there, I'd truly appreciate it.

    Thanks and regards

    Neena
