Smooth Fox Terrier

A Smooth Fox Terrier is a mid-size dog with an alert expression. It is built sturdily and has a short coat. The colors that are in the coat are white with tan, black, or tan and black markings. It is an energetic dog that is constantly inquisitive.

History of the Smooth Fox Terrier

The origin of this terrier is the British Isles back during the 17th century. The farmers used these terriers to rid their farms of various vermin. This included rats and in some cases foxes. With the Smooth Fox Terrier's incredible eyesight, sharp sense of smell, and endurance it could chase the prey even out of their homes underground. The Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers were part of the same breed until they were separated in the middle part of the 1980s. The AKC recognized both of them in 1885 as part of the Terrier Group.

Temperament of the Smooth Fox Terrier

This Smooth Fox Terrier is extremely energetic and full of personality. It is very curious about their surroundings. They love to play and require a lot of exercise to burn off their energy. They definitely need to be in a fenced in yard when not on a leash though, because they could go off chasing a critter easily. These dogs are so fast they can get loose and go far quickly.

This breed can be headstrong and very independent. The Smooth Fox Terrier loves to dig, so watch for it digging around the fences, it could just dig under. Like all terriers this breed loves to bark. This actually makes it a good guard dog though.

This terrier can be a handful for its size. It can become aggressive with dogs around its size. The Smooth Fox Terriers have to be socialized with other animals to keep them from chasing them. Also they are not very tolerant with rough treatment, and because of this fact they are not recommended for families with real young children. The breed can be uneasy around strangers but this varies from dog to dog. With the proper attention and training this breed makes a great companion and pet.

Health Concerns for the Breed

There some health concerns the can affect this breed such as:

- Heart Problems
- Legg-Perthes
- Luxating Patella
- Seizures
- Thyroid Problems
- Digestive Problems

Some of these concerns can be avoided through proper breeding. Make sure to know the health history of the dog.

Grooming Requirements for the Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier's coat sheds which is not typical of terriers. With its coat being so short though grooming is easy. The dog just needs to be brushed every other week to keep the dead hair from the undercoat in control. Trim the dog's nails as needed to make sure they do not overgrow.

Check the dog's ears to make sure they are clear of any wax buildup on the outside. If they have a foul smell this is a sign of an ear infection and it needs to be checked by a veterinarian immediately. The dog could also have ear mites.
