Accessorizing Snake Cages

When Plain isn't Enough

Snakes cages just aren't enough for your favorite pet. You'll want to add hides, water bowls and keep track of the tank internals.

Once you have acquired or built your snake cage, you'll want to first ensure that you can keep an eye on the humidity and temperature of the tank. You can find thermometers and humidity gages for relatively cheap. This will help you keep your snake tank regulated for the type of snake that you have.

You will also want a substrate to put into your tank. You can use torn up paper towels (great to ensure new snakes don't have mites) or substrates such as sand, moss, aspen chips or other mixture. I actually use a variety in my snakes cage as he really likes the differences and will travel between aspen shavings and moss.

Though my snake is often in the open, there are times that he just wants to hide. So ensure that you get yourself a place that your snake can hide. Mine uses a fake rock or will sometimes hide under the substrate.

If you have a snake that likes to climb, then you may want to provide a log or vines that will allow for that. Just be sure that if you put natural items such as wood or plants in the tank that they are sanitized first. This will help keep mites out of the cage.

There are plenty of other accessories that you can put into your snake cages. Just remember that different snakes may have different needs. You can read up on the type of snake that you have to help determine their needs.
