Feral Snakehead Fish

Outbreaks of he snakehead fish happen every so often. History keeps repeating itself as these feral fish are spread. This is the story of the snakehead fish in a typical outbreak area.

Fisheries biologists are on the look out for northern snakehead fish. Four counties in Arkansas are currently being monitored for this aquatic species.

A few months back a breeding colony was discovered and all efforts have concentrated on looking for any more outbreaks of this feral fish. Recent floods for the area were a concern that were unwarranted. Thankfully no more have been found so far.

40 individuals searched waterways for the last week with no further examples of the snakehead fish being found. Fisheries officials are pleased with this result.

This Asian fish species gained notoriety in 1990 when infestations were found in Maryland. These strange fish became headlines overnight but have resurfaced again recently.

Due to their ferocious nature they wield their brutal teeth on other aquatic life. They become the apex predator in many systems that they are introduced to. Growing to a whopping 20 lb these fish are a threat to most other native fish species.

As an additional asset they have the ability to traverse short distances on land. This allows them to search for new pond when the last one becomes stripped of food. In fact this is how the fish was discovered in April when an unsuspecting farmer came upon it moving on land.

Officials are hoping locals will keep an eye out. The fish's skin has a snake like pattern making it easily distinguished from other native species. If you find one please contact authorities. Due to it's insidious nature the snakehead cannot be legaly possessed.

Video Of A Snakehead Fish

Snakehead

A snakehead fish found in Philadelphia in 2004. UPDATE Just to clarify so no one goes insane with anger, I photographed this snakehead at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is not owned by myself or any other private individual, so at least in the case of this guy, we are all safe from these "piscine carnivores" as BlueBerryPickn phrased it (quite beautifully, I might add)
