Your Business in 30 Seconds
Tips for making your 30-second pitch more effective
- Don't try to squeeze everything into your commercial. I see this at every event that I attend. A person stands up and starts to give a complete run-down of everything that his or her business can do. The result is that everyone listening to the commercial gets lost in a sea of options and details.
- Focus on only one aspect of your business in your commercial. Often I hear people put three or more target words into the pitch. My advice is to target a single element of your business.
- Avoid jargon terms at all costs. Think about it this way: knowing the jargon may make you feel smarter, but it makes listeners feel dumb. So you will confuse and alienate people at the event.
- Create colorful analogies. Most commercials are boring. Think about your particular product or service in terms of something in a completely different context.
- If others copy the style or structure of your commercial, smile. I used to use a tagline in mine, "If your website looks like every other website, then you are not one of our clients." My commercial was followed by "If your tax return looks like..." and "If your bathroom remodel..." and "If your sales results..." and so on. Every time someone copied the structure, everyone looked back at me, and my message was reinforced.
- Remember that the best networking develops over time. Positive results from networking happen when others are comfortable with you.
- Rotate your commercial. If you attend any networking events that are held regularly with the same people (BNI, LeTip or similar), you should give a different commercial each week. People who often complain about referral groups have horrible or boring commercials.
- Track the results of each commercial. Working from your list of commercials, make notes as to which commercials produce the best immediate reactions, lasting impression, copycat commercials (see above), and importantly the most quality referrals. Get rid of the commercials that do nothing and write new ones.
- Steal great ideas. If you hear someone give a great commercial, write it down and tailor it to your business. This can be risky as sometimes people try to steal someone else's humor or personality. Make sure that it is a good fit. If it feels awkward to you, it will be horrible for others.
- Slow down and use dramatic silence. At networking events, people are generally in a hurry to squeeze everything into a small space. Use a dramatic pause in your commercial and watch every set of eyes focus on you. Then deliver the winning phrase. Hard to do but a huge payoff if you take the risk.
National Networking Groups
- Business Network International
- BNI (Business Network Int'l.) is a business and professional networking organization that offers members the opportunity to share ideas, contacts and most importantly, referrals.
- LeTip International
- LeTip International, Inc. is a professional organization of men and women dedicated to the highest standards of competence and service. Our primary purpose is to give and receive qualified business tips or leads. Members will, at all times, maintain the highest professional integrity. Each business category is represented by one member and conflicts of interest are disallowed.
- Toastmasters International
- Toastmasters is the best way to improve your communication skills. Lose your fears of public speaking and learn skills that will help you be more successful in whatever path you've chosen in life.
- BNI Delaware Valley Region
- While not the most exciting website, the BNI DVR site is the regional homepage for BNI chapters in NJ, PA and DE. There is some good information, and if you find the Voorhees Regional chapter, you can see who the current president is...
Local Chambers of Commerce
- Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey
- The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey is the largest and most active chamber in Southern New Jersey. They hold a wide variety of events, seminars, and such. This chamber is very active in governmental affairs. If you have to join only one chamber, start here.
- Burlington County Chamber of Commerce
- The Burlington County Chamber of Commerce is steadily growing. They have a variety of events, notably a free breakfast before business and a monthly lunch (not free). Both events are well attended. I have found that this chamber may not have the big businesses that the SJ Chamber has (above), but it does have more business owners in sight.
- Cherry Hill Regional Chamber of Commerce
- The Cherry Hill Regional Chamber of Commerce is another very active chamber. They hold regular Tuesday lunch events, as well as a scattering of other networking events. If you want to get the inside track in Cherry Hill, this is a chamber to try.
Local Networking Groups
- eWomenNetwork
- eWomenNetwork is founded on the philosophy of "Giving First." They provide a platform and a forum for women business owners and executives to interface with other women for the purpose of enhancing each other's bottom line.
They meet monthly in Camden and Atlantic Counties and quarterly throughout the southern New Jersey region. Other local chapters include Philadelphia, Buxmont (Bucks/Montgomery County) and King of Prussia. - Synergy Works
- Newly formed weekly networking group geared towards making strategic partnerships. Format varies week to week and the focus is on getting business for members. Membership is not open to anyone - you need to be invited by a member.
- Referral Exchange Network
- A project of Achievement Dynamics Institute, founded by Mario Pinardo. There are currently two lunch chapters (Monday and Thursday), which meet twice a month. Not as strict as LeTip or BNI chapters.
