Why Do Christians Doubt Barack Obama's Faith?
Religion is a topic that makes most journalists uncomfortable, unless they can expose hypocrisy - as in preachers who speak of virtue while carrying on an affair - or outrage such as Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the doings at Barack Obama's now former church in Chicago. Most journalists think taking religion seriously might require them to study the claims of various faiths and too many of them have already decided this might lead them to a faith higher than themselves or politics and they don't wish to take such a journey of personal discovery.That is too bad, because such an attitude exposes one of the main gaps between most Americans - who believe in God - and most journalists, who don't.
"I'm rooted in the Christian tradition," said Obama, who has declared himself a Christian. But then he adds something that most Christians will see as universalism: "I believe there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people."An exception is Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cathleen Falsani, who interviewed Obama in 2004 for her book, "The God Factor: Inside the Spiritual Lives of Public People "and asked him specific questions about his religious beliefs.
"I'm rooted in the Christian tradition," said Obama, who has declared himself a Christian. But then he adds something that most Christians will see as universalism: "I believe there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people."
Falsani correctly brings up John 14:6 (and how many journalists would know such a verse, much less ask a question based on it?) in which Jesus says of Himself, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." That sounds pretty exclusive, but Obama says it depends on how this verse is heard.
According to Falsani, Obama thinks that "all people of faith - Christians, Jews, Muslims, animists, everyone - know the same God." (her words)
If that is so, Jesus wasted his time coming to Earth and he certainly did not have to suffer the pain of rejection and crucifixion if there are ways to God other than through Himself.
Here's Obama telling Falsani, "The difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and proselytize. There's the belief, certainly in some quarters, that if people haven't embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior, they're going to hell." Falsani adds, "Obama doesn't believe he, or anyone else, will go to hell. But he's not sure he'll be going to heaven, either."

When I tuck in my daughters at night and I feel like I've been a good father to them, and I see that I am transferring values that I got from my mother and that they're kind people and that they're honest people, and they're curious people, that's a little piece of heaven."

Obama can call himself anything he likes, but there is a clear requirement for one to qualify as a Christian and Obama doesn't meet that requirement.
One cannot deny central tenets of the Christian faith, including the deity and uniqueness of Christ as the sole mediator between God and Man and be a Christian. Such people do have a label applied to them in Scripture. They are called a "false prophet."I hope some national journalist or commentator with knowledge of such things asks Obama about this and doesn't let him get away with re-writing Scripture to suit his political ends.

Reason #1: Obama Believes There Are Many Paths to Heaven
In a 2004 interview with Cathleen Falsani, Obama said, "I believe that there are many paths to the same place." Obama also said, "All people of faith-Christians, Jews, Muslims, animists, everyone knows the same God."
But Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Nowhere in the Bible is there a reference to Obama's "many paths."
At a meeting of evangelical leaders in 2008, Obama was asked whether he believed Jesus was the only way to salvation. Obama replied, "Jesus is the only way for me."'

Jesus warned us not to be deceived by those who would lead us astray. "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it."
Jesus is the narrow gate and the only way to heaven. Obama's view says, in effect, that Jesus' death on the cross was unnecessary since there are multiple ways to God. The many paths of Obama are in reality just the broad road to destruction.
Reason #2: Obama Denies the Authority of the Bible

God's people confess that the Bible is God's inspired and infallible Word and the Christian's final authority of faith and practice. In a recent speech Obama distinguished himself from those who believe in the authority of the Bible. "Now this is going to be difficult for some who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, as many evangelicals do." Obama went on to disparage and denigrate the scriptures.

Obama even invokes the Bible by applying biblical pages to his campaign's theme of political hope that actually refer to the hope Christians have in Christ. "At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise, that American promise, and in the words of scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess."
Obama twists the Bible in an attempt to lend credibility to his agenda, even though he denies the Bible and it's clear moral teachings. Obama is even derisive of faithful African American pastors who treat the Bible with respect. For Obama, his opinion, not the scripture, is the final authority.
Jesus prayed to His Father, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."
Reason #3: Obama Supports Homosexuality

Barack Obama is an unabashed supporter of special privileges for homosexuals, a stand that flies in the face of the biblical prohibition on homosexual sodomy.

However, Obama lavished praise on his controversial former pastor and mentor, Jeremiah Wright, for being "very good on gay and lesbian issues." Obama's former church, Trinity United Church of Christ voted recently to approve of homosexual marriage.
Obama dismissed as "obscure," the clear and definitive teaching of the Apostle Paul in Romans 1 that calls homosexual acts "indecent" and "perverse."
Obama has also promised to overturn the Federal Defense of Marriage Act and promised to reverse the "don't ask, don't tell policy regarding homosexuality in the US military.
When it comes to homosexuality, Obama opposes the traditional, biblical and historic standards of the Christian faith.
Reason #4: Obama Supports Abortion

Appearing before a recent meeting of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in America, Obama proudly said, "I have consistently had a 100% pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America."

Throughout the history of the church, Christians have opposed abortion because they believe that life begins at conception. Abortion is as an attack on the innocent human life of a baby who is made in the image of God.
Obama recently said at a Forum hosted by Pastor Rick Warren that to know when a baby ought to have human rights it is "above his pay grade," but he is very clear that a baby can be killed anytime, even after it is born.
On four separate occasions Obama has voted against bills that prevented the killing of infants that are born alive, having survived an attempted abortion.
Reason #5: Obama Affirms Muslim Prayer
In a New York Times interview in 2007, entitled Obama, A man of the World, Obama fondly recalled the Islamic evening call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset."

The article said this would "give any one living in Alabama a heart attack."

- None of this disqualifies Obama from being a Christian. By this criteria, Christianity is not a major world religion but a tiny conservative cult. If you don't like Obama, just say so. It's OK to disagree with another Christian who has different political views. But this rhetoric changes Christianity from a universal and evangelical religion into a highly exclusive and elitist sect. Finally, all politicians pretend to be more pious than they actually are. Bush had a far more dubious claim to being a Christian in terms of church attendance, knowledge of the Bible, etc.

- Joe, since you don't think that Obama's promotion and support of homosexuality and abortion (including partial birth abortion), lack of personal testimony, black liberation theology, denial of the authority of the Bible, and his belief in many paths to heaven disqualifies Obama's Christianity claim, what is your definition of a Christian? Obviously not the Biblical definition.

- Well, there are many varieties of "Christian" out there; and any number of different interpretations of Biblical/Judeo-Christian beliefs and teachings. Are the guys who made these videos really qualified to judge whether Barack Obama is a Christian or not? I wonder what sorts of judgments they would make on the "genuineness" of my beliefs or yours? And is it really their place to judge people in that fashion? Just some questions that have occurred to me in watching some of these videos...

- The guy who wrote this article is himself a Christian. What qualifies him to be able to tell is the evidence posted on this lens, as well as other videos that expose Obama's ignorance of the entire message of the Bible as a whole. It is very obvious that Obama has no idea what the true message of the Bible is. He takes passages way out of context in the Old Testament when talking to a church before he was elected. He supports abortion, which no true Christian could do in good conscience. He supports gay marriage, while it is very obvious that the God of the Bible does not. Read the Bible and you know yourself why Obama does not at all act, talk, or live like a Christian. If one studies the various religions and their leading tenets, and then listens to what you or I say, it is easier to identify what we believe. Obama has exposed himself. And it wasn't hard to identify his motives either. Surely, you must know that it is quite common for politicians to lie their way to victory.

- I'm afraid I can't accept your reasoning here. Actually the religious affiliation of the president isn't that important to me since our government was founded on the principle of separation of church and state. Religious freedom was the reason many people came to the North American colonies, now the United States.
