"They say I killed six or seven men for snoring. Well, it ain't true, I only killed one man for snoring."

John Wesley Hardin (May 26, 1853-August 19, 1895) was a sociopath, outlaw and gunfighter of the American Old West. He was born in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. In the history of the West, John Wesley Hardin ranks as one of the most prolific killers of all.

At the American House Hotel, where Hardin had put up for the night, he began firing bullets through a bedroom wall simply to stop the snoring of a stranger in the next room. Note:Not legal then and not legal now!

Has Snoring Affected Your Life

It has had a great affect on me, yes, InfinityMC snores...

The worst thing about it is I don't hear myself and tape recordings could have be somebody else.

Sleepovers are a problem because I can't stay awake for 24 hours and since I'm tired all the time writing a len as well as going out to the movies, I have become the old dude snoring (so I have been told).

"Not so silent killer"

Men especially over 40 are more likely to have sleep disorders! More than women...

About 37 percent of American adults ages 30-69 have at least mild OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).

In a sleep apnea cycle, breathing stops, blood oxygen levels drop, and the person wakes briefly gasping for breath. This continues hundreds of times throughout the night.

Apnea is classified as a complete cessation of breathing.

Each episode of sleep apnea lasts a minimum of 10 seconds

What causes this high prevalence of sleep disordered breathing in baby boomers?

It's not just because they are 'boomers'; rather, it is due to the continued changes of growing older.

Changes in airway anatomy occur with age. The soft palate gets longer, the pharyngeal fat pads increase in size, and the shape of bony structures around the pharyngeal airway change. All of these contribute to the increased prevalence of sleep apnea in baby boomers.

Being overweight increases sleep disordered breathing...

Football legend Reggie White, https://img-srv.dtcbuilder.com/engine/builder/images/2/6/3/2/8/2/file/9.jpg a defensive end for the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, is regarded as one of the NFL's greatest players. He died from complications related to sleep apnea and sarcoidosis at age 43.

Sleep apnea has an insidious and damaging impact on a person's health. It makes patients feel chronically tired, erodes their quality of life and impairs their ability to perform safety-critical tasks, such as driving a car.

It also heightens the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Untreated sleep apnea causes accidents and illness, undermines a person's effectiveness in the workplace and imposes large burdens on the healthcare system.

While hypothyroidism is more prevalent in female baby boomers, male boomers with constant fatigue are more likely to be suspects of sleep apnea - although 80 to 90 percent of those who are go undiagnosed.

As many as three million middle-aged men don't know they have this chronic upper airway obstruction during sleep, usually associated with loud snoring.

Many people long to die peacefully in their sleep, their heart stopping while they dream and snore. But reality is different: Heart attack deaths actually hit their lowest point at night, and peak between sunrise and noon. The exception is people who suffer from sleep apnea. New research shows that they are far more likely to die in their sleep.

The new research, published in today's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 112 Minnesota residents, diagnosed with sleep apnea, who died suddenly of heart-related causes. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn

Researchers found that more than half the sleep apnea sufferers died between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In the general population, this was the time people were least likely to die of cardiac-related problems.

The literature suggests up to 80 per cent of people with sleep apnea don't have a clue what's going on...

Research shows that a neck circumference greater than 16 inches in a woman and 17 inches in a man correlates with an increased risk for the disorder, said Dr. Robert Gunnink, medical director of REM Medical and a board-certified sleep medicine and neurology specialist.

Do-It-Yourself Strategies...

Lighten Up For snorers who are overweight, a 10 percent loss of body weight can greatly reduce snoring.

Kick Butts Tobacco smoke clogs your nasal passages, damages your lungs, and causes the upper airway to swell, which constricts your breathing.

Get a Move On People who get regular aerobic exercise, even brisk walking, tend to have less upper-airway congestion and more lung capacity, which improves breathing during sleep.

Snack With Care Don't feast or drink booze before bed: a full stomach can make breathing more difficult, and alcohol relaxes the muscles in the back of the throat; both can cause snoring.

Do the Twist Snoring is most common among those who sleep on their backs. To stay off your back, sew a tennis ball into the breast pocket of an old T-shirt and wear the shirt backward to bed.

Go on Tilt The American Academy of Otolaryngology recommends that snorers raise the heads of their beds by four inches. You can do this by placing books or bricks under the headboard legs.

Avoid Sedatives Muscle relaxants, sleeping pills, painkillers, tranquilizers, and other sedatives relax the muscles in the throat, encouraging snoring.

Train Your Throat Exercises to strengthen throat muscles are available online. And playing a wind instrument can help. In one study, snorers who practiced the Australian didjeridoo for four months cut snoring threefold.

Sing in the Shower Or in the choir, the band, or any other setting for about 20 minutes per day. Singers snore significantly less frequently than nonsingers.

Attack Allergies Allergic reactions are a key cause of nasal congestion and seasonal snoring. Antihistamines of the sedating variety may worsen snoring, but steroid or saline nasal sprays could help.

Squelch Sinusitis Inflammation of the sinuses blocks airflow. Drinking fluids and using nasal sprays can ease it.
