For a flat, mid-sized, paved driveway

Snow Throwers, Time to oil and grease it ready

Single-stage gas blowers are recommended if you've got a flat, mid-sized, paved driveway and you don't get heaps of snow. These machines are comparatively light and easy to handle. Most can clear swaths 20-22 inches wide. They are best for paved driveways since the auger makes contact with the ground and could scoop and throw stones from an unpaved driveway.

Electric Powered?

Snow Throwers, Time to oil and grease it ready

Electric snow throwers offer a tempting alternative -- but only for some folks. If you have a short driveway and live where it doesn't snow much, then I envy you, because electric snow throwers (snowthrowers) could be right for you.

If your driveway is under 100'-150', you don't have to worry about their main limitation: namely, that straying more than 100'-150' from the power source reduces the juice too much. Of course, the cord gets in the way, a drawback gas-powered snow blowers (snowblowers) don't have.

For a long, wide or hilly driveway and heavy snow coverage

Yes, it's time to oil and grease the snow-blower!

If you've got a long, wide or hilly driveway and you get frequent, heavy snow coverage, you'll want to look into a more powerful snow blower - a two-stage gas powered snow blower.

These blowers have wide augers that gather snow at the first stage and an impeller that throws it at the second stage. They're essentially what you need if you have a gravel driveway since the auger mechanism scoops the snow from above the ground and doesn't actually touch the ground. Some of these machines can clear swaths 28 to 30 inches wide.

Gas-Powered?

Snow Throwers, Time to oil and grease it ready

All gas-powered snow blowers require regular engine maintenance to keep it in tip-top working order and usable over a long period of time.

Get to know how to mix the fuel (a combination of gas & oil) that powers it. Check and make sure that machine's air filter is still clean otherwise it will block up the air intake into the fuel mixture and degrade the machine's performance. Keep the machine's moving parts clean of rust and lubricate them often. Pay particular attention to the impeller and levers that engage it.

Four-cycle snow blowers run on regular gasoline. They too need oil and be properly maintained, make sure these are done before each use.

User and safety precautions

Yes, it's time to oil and grease the snow-blower!

Snow blower operation should follow all the instructions and safety precautions in the owner's manual. Listed below are some guidelines to follow:
  • Wear warm, nonrestrictive clothing and shoes with good traction.
  • Never attempt to unclog the thrower when it's running. The auger and impeller can seriously injure a hand or foot.
  • When unclogging a snow blower, use a broom handle or similar wooden item. The auger and impeller can injure your hands even when the thrower is shut off.
  • Never point the discharge chute at a bystander or nearby object. A solid item hurled from the discharge chute can shatter glass or injure a bystander.
  • Always set the parking brake (if equipped) and stop the snow collection mechanism when leaving the operating position.
  • Be careful of solid objects hidden under the snow. Striking a hidden object can do significant damage to the object, the snow thrower and the operator.
  • Slopes should be cleared by moving up and down the face, not across. Do not attempt to clear a slope that is steeper than recommended in the snow blower's operating manual.
  • Follow the manufacturer's recommended storage procedure when storing your snow blower during the off-season.
