Japanese macaques range through the forested mountains and highlands of Japan.

Monkeys have been bathing in the hot springs of Jigokudani for at least the past 40 years, and it is believed to be the only place in the world where this happens. Today a park protects this natural habitat, home to some 250 wild snow monkeys. Take a few minutes and watch them soaking in the hot springs live here on a web cam!

Japan's sole monkey - the Japanese macaque - lives both in subtropical lowlands and in sub alpine regions. The animals living in the Japanese Alps, where snow blankets the ground for most of the winter, are affectionately called snow monkeys and have become a great tourist attraction. Here, macaques enjoy warming up in a natural hot pool. In this enchanting book, Heather Angel unravels how these monkeys live in troops: showing them in different seasons bathing and drinking in the hot pool, grooming, feeding, youngsters playing with snowballs and heart-warming shots of newborns with their mothers.

Japanese Macaque
Many of us are familiar with images of monkeys soaking up the watery warmth of a hot spring in the midst of a bone chilling, wintery landscape. These are the Snow Monkeys, or Japanese macaques of Japan, living at latitudes of 41° to 31° north of the equator, the only monkeys to live that far north in the world.

Learn about the Snow Monkey

They keep warm with a thick fur coat in the winter and soak in hot thermal pools. They are good swimmers. If they live near the coast they will dive for shellfish. Despite their ability to survive in such a harsh environment, snow monkeys are endangered. As populations increase, human developments encroach on their habitat. Snow monkeys are mainly "frugivorous," meaning they eat fruit. But as their habitat disappears, so does their source of food. As a result, many snow monkeys now raid orchards and fields for food, putting them at risk of being captured or killed by farmers. Without habitat protection measures, the future of the snow monkey in Japan is uncertain.

Mozu: The Snow Monkey

Amazon Price: (as of 12/23/2009)Buy Now

The movie is built around a hook, which is the biography of one resilient Japanese macaque, whom they name Mozu. Although it feels gimicky, having one central character is the most effective route I have seen into the primate world. But the writers/directors don't force the movie to be only about Mozu - the let the macaque world happen, using Mozu as an anchor.

But the most important thing is that the movie makers succeed in getting lots and lots of different footage of lots of interesting events in the macaque world. Snowy weather, bathing and swimming, tree climbing, social interaction and lots of grooming.
