So What is Agoraphobia exactly?

Agorphobia is basically a fear of either crowded places or wide open spaces, but crowded places is most common, these anxieties can be for many different reasons but the most reported are fear of ridicle, being judged or watched in some way.

Some people have described agoraphobia as the fear of wide open spaces and to some degree this is true, but for a huge number of suffers it's mainly the fear of crowded places such as the supermarket or cinema. For someone not suffering from these symptoms this can seem very strange but for a sufferer of agoraphobia it can be very distressing.

Agoraphobia can be hell for the suffer, can you imagine not being able to go and do some shopping without the fear of being ridiculed and even killed? These are some of the more severe fears that agoraphobia suffers have to go through. Some people will just get mild symptoms such as anxiety but others will have a real problem when it comes to having to do these types of tasks. They will great steps at avoiding the anxious situation.

Why do people get Agoraphobia?

There are lots of reasons why someone might get agoraphobia but the most common reasons are disturbing or distressing events that have happened in the past such as a death of a friend or family member, going through pregnancy or I friendship or relationship breakdown. At first the symptoms may be mild and you may not even realise you have a problem but over time if it's not treated it will just get worse.

There are plenty of different methods and self-help guides that will help you get a grip on the disorder but what works for someone else may not work for you. So the first thing you should do if you think you are suffering from Agoraphobia is get some advice from a doctor or professional therapist. Don`t put if off as this can cause more severe problems.

    thank you for sharing with us on what is agoraphobia means. I've been introduced to EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) once and they say that eft training can actually cure agoraphobic person and EFT got very unusual impressive results. In most cases, the agoraphobic person can travel well beyond their current limits with no anxiety whatsoever. In many cases, this relief is permanent. I've learned this technique through eft training manual which I found it very informative to deal with agoraphobia.

    I have suffered agoraphobia , i get anxious about places i go , and sometimes i thnk to much on the spot it becomes a obsession . But I found its my IBS that causing me problems which distracts my concentration . Im on medication CItalopram to control me and calm me down . IM challenging my self in sitatuations , but im worse when travelling in huge open spaces . im feel safe when im in a room or sometimes on my own .
