How We Define Social Media
If you do a quick define: search on Google for "social media" you get the following:
Social Media: Social media describes online technologies and practices which people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other. -Wikipedia
Social Media: Web content such as blogs or wikis, created by individuals or as a collaboration of individuals. Social media content is often times intended as the starting point for larger conversations. -Buzzlogic
We define social media in a similar way with a bit of reality thrown in:
Social Media: Content published on platforms which allows for and promotes participation by the general online audience. Like all forms of media, social media is a collection of organicly evolved and intentionally affected thoughts, insights, and opinions. -Web2Center

Fetching RSS feed... please stand byLink Building With Social Media
I suggest the easy route because it is... uh, easier. :)
But, you can't develop a strategy before you get some good old fashioned know-how.
So, let me tell you, in my opinion there are only 3 things to consider when developing a link building strategy.
1. Search engines perception of the linking domain (spam site or CNN.com)
2. Anchor text from the linking domain ("click here" v. "buy a VW")
3. Actual location of the link in your site structure (does it link to a homepage or a deep relevant post on a blog)
Address these 3 concerns and your back-links will explode and you will find yourself on the first page of lots of relevant Google searches.
