Social Media Optimization or SMO takes the principles of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and applies them to social websites such as YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, Digg, and Netscape. Companies, people or organizations create an online presence on these websites with the goal of increasing visibility, exposure, or managing their reputation (see reputation management). Products or services may be offered for sale on these websites, however the project generally has a passive quality. Active online campaigns are more commonly classified as Social Media Marketing (SMM) and usually strive to achieve a viral marketing goal.
A secondary aspect of SMO deals with online reputation management.
