Social networking and how to make money making new friends
Ranked #3,949 in Business, #94,414 overall
What are social networks?
There are hundreds of social network services now available online. Some of the most well known being MySpace,
Friendster and Facebook, YouTube and others.
By 2005, MySpace, was reportedly getting more page views than Google, with Facebook, a competitor, rapidly growing in size.
Social networks connect people at low cost, usually just the price of an Internet connection. This is beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand their contact base. These networks can act as a customer relationship management tool for companies selling products and services. Companies can also use social networks for advertising in the form of banners and text ads. Social networks can make it easier to keep in touch with contacts around the world.
Most social networks are currently free to join and maintain membership. Companies such as MySpace and Facebook sell online advertising on their site. Since they are seeking large memberships, charging for membership would be counter productive. Sites are also seeking other ways to make money, such as by creating an online marketplace (Facebook's Marketplace) or by selling professional information and social connections to businesses: such as LinkedIn.
A social network's member serves a dual role as both a supplier and the consumer of content. . Revenue is typically gained in the autonomous business model via advertisements, but subscription-based revenue is possible when membership and content levels are sufficiently high.
Recently a new breed of social network marketing companies has arisen that offer anyone the chance to make money simply by a combination of joining, blogging, adding comments to other member's sites, and referring new members. These sites are free to join although some have added benefits as an upgraded member. In addition they are rapidly becoming great places to advertise at low rates. Therefore individual marketers as well as small businesses can take advantage of advertising to the memberships of these services.

- stay away from gather.com. They promise the world but never deliver. The points and earnings have gone way down and their customer service and interaction with members is virtually non existent. They had a good thing going with a group of members managing the site but dropped the program due to what some suspect was financial hardship. Membership has gone down, folks are looking elsewhere and gather lost the chance to keep and grow a site that would have made facebook look like a preschool. Too bad they can't get the oldsters back. Their friendly manner and positive ways made the site work. Now, it's full of back biting characters who post nothing and hang out giving gather nothing but clicks.
