Social Networking Sites Provide an Excellent Way to Self-Promote Your Blogs, Articles, Squidoo Lenses and More!

So you've written a fantastic article... Great job! Now how the heck do you get people to come take a look? If you're a stay at home mom or dad, or working from home to pay some bills, it's likely that you don't have alot of money to pay a marketing guru to promote your work. I have found social networking and other sites to be invaluable in promoting my Squidoo pages, articles, blogs and other work-at-home endeavors. I'm not a guru by any means. In fact, I'm quite new to all this myself. However, I plan to share what I've learned, and I hope you'll find some value in this information. You're welcome to suggest ideas. The more we help each other, the more success we'll all experience!

Self-Promotion vs. Spam 

Let's clarify and try to prevent spamming...

Spam: (as defined by #12 in the Urban Dictionary)
- The crap you don't want to eat
- The crap you don't want in your inbox
- The crap you don't want on your forums

Spam is no longer limited to the annoying and unsolicited emails that you get for dating, winning the lottery, or worse. At this point in internet time, any annoying and repetitive messages can generally be considered spam. That being said, one needs to pay careful attention to the gray area between self-promotion and spam. There still isn't anyone who enjoys being spammed, so don't join social networking circles with the intention to collect 2000 friends and remind them every 5 minutes that you need referrals for ClixSense. No one will like you and you won't get any business.

On the other hand, social networking does provide wonderful opportunities to SHARE information with friends. The purpose behind social networking is to befriend like-minded individuals who are certain to enjoy the links that you send to them. In exchange, you get to review their pages, articles and blogs that will likely be enjoyable to you as well. There are people who really do make money with ClixSense and genuinely want to share the opportunity. Self-promotion is a fine art. Here are some tips to get the best experience from social networking...

- Search for people who have similar interests
- Comment, rate and vote on friends' articles, blogs and Squidoo pages
- Try to categorize what you send, and to whom to send it
- Don't overdo promotion of your work (in other words, don't annoy people!)
- Provide helpful tips and share what you know. Being greedy gets you nowhere.

Squidoo is a website where you can build, for FREE, a page (called a lens) about any old thing you like...well, you probably should keep it clean! But anyway, do you know alot about 64 1/2 mustangs, or Metallica vs. Napster, or cleaning your home with all natural products? Build a lens!!

Squidoo isn't necessarily a 'social networking platform' but it can work in very much the same way. Build a group of 'followers' and share, share, share! Several of the social networking platforms listed on this page are also great places to get traffic for your Squidoo lenses.

The greatest part about Squidoo is the money you can make from your lenses. Earn money through Squidoo's ad revenue share, affiliate links, or by pushing traffic to your own blogs, affiliate marketing sites, website, or e-Books. The possibilities are endless.

Tagfoot is a social networking and social bookmarking site where you can share news, bookmarks, wishlists, videos and more. Tagfoot also shares it's ad revenue making it possible for you to earn money for using the service. Earn money with Google AdSense, through Tagfoot's Amazon Rev Share, and earn shares of referred friends' earned revenue. Now that's the kind of social networking that I like!!

I've made several good friends at Tagfoot. We exchange bookmarks and comment on each others Squidoo lenses and blogs. Great support system. Lots of fun, funny and informative shares with friends on Tagfoot.

Twitter 

Twitter is a short messaging service that allows you to follow people of interest and get real-time updates on what's happening. Messages work over and are sent to multiple networks and devices. Whether it's breaking news, friendly comment, or links to the latest and greatest of anything, you can find it on Twitter.

As with any other site, Twitter users don't care much for spam. With most people following hundreds, if not thousands of other users, spam can quickly become overwhelming. That said, Twitter is also a GREAT place to get the word out on your endeavors. Get started following others and before you know it you'll have a bunch of people interested in what you do!

I found this sentence straight off the 'About Twitter' page and I found it to be very appealing:
"We plan to build Twitter, Inc into a successful, revenue-generating company that attracts world-class talent with an inspiring culture and attitude towards doing business."

Earn Points and $$ Make Money $$



Gather is the premier social network for the over-30 crowd. Join Gather to find a sense of community and share smart conversations with people who share your interests.

Join and create groups, submit news and articles, and earn points spending time enjoying yourself. Conversations about weather woes, kitchen renovations or anything can be started, joined, grouped and commented upon. Hook up with current friends, or make some new ones to share your stories about life.

Gather points can be redeemed for great gift cards, or cash through Paypal. I haven't personally used this site much because I've got so many other avenues that I visit daily. You guys should sign up and pressure me, and then we can all be making money with one more stream of revenue from a social networking site.

myLot 

$$ earn money for having conversations $$

myLot is a great social networking site where you can strike up a conversation and earn a bit of cash for doing so. Complete with news headlines, local weather, discussions based on interests, and lists of top discussions, myLot is a cool place to hang out. The site encompasses a whole lot of topics. It kind of reminds me of a thrift store. If you sort through the muck, you can find real treasures!

Earn money for everything you do on myLot. Start discussions, post responses, make comments on current discussions, news or blogs. Also make money for referring friends.

From my perspective, myLot is full of those from the younger crowd. With that however, comes alot of questions about making money. If making money online is your field of expertise, or you're the proud owner of a referral link that needs lots of attention, then you can spend alot of time pointing people toward your ClixSense account LOL! In all seriousness though, myLot will delete conversations and responses that they feel are spam, so word your answers and comments appropriately, or respond with private messages to get your point across. Many, many, many people are on myLot looking for ways to make money, and looking for ways to avoid getting scammed, so spend a bit of time there and you might get some good referrals for your programs, pages and affiliate sites.

**When you first sign up you'll be inundated with pictures to describe your interests. I got a little carried away, so don't spend hours looking through pictures (like I did....unless you want to!) Just click a few of your top interests for each category and move on. Otherwise you'll be there a long time...there's a lot of categories. I almost gave up, so be forewarned!

make a difference

Care2 is a place where you CAN make a difference. Vote for petitions or start your own. Join a group or start your own. Read news pertinent to issues that affect our world today. Submit news and articles about living green, healthy lifestyles, helping others, helping animals and wildlife and so much more.

I've found Care2 to be a great place to submit stories and articles that I write that are intended to help others. Care2 members rate items up or down, just like Digg or Reddit. My articles or Squidoo lenses about natural ingredients or family issues get attention. Business or making money related posts tend to get overlooked, or deleted.

Moms Unite!!

CafeMom is the largest social networking website catering to moms, stay at home moms, work at home moms and any sort of parenting done by women...(sorry men!) It's like a MySpace for moms! Add fun stuff to your profile and then exchange business ideas, talk about your children, your family and yourself. Get support from a great and HUGE bunch of women.

CafeMom has a few great games that take you to random profiles to meet new people. Leave a short note to welcome yourself or invite other moms to see what you've got going on.

build a wikizine!

Zimbio gives you the opportunity to build or contribute to wikizines. Wikizines are interactive magazines that anyone can create or edit "with coverage of current events, cultural reference points, and niche areas of interest." Zimbio gives you the ability to ping your blogs, including Squidoo, to pull in articles or pages that you've recently updated.

Anytime you create a blog entry, article, or Squidoo page, simply go to Zimbio and 'ping your blog.' Zimbio pulls in your latest articles and you get to decide if you want them posted to a wikizine that's already been created, or if you'd like to become the author of your very own wikizine.

MySpace 

no scoffing...MySpace deserves credit where credit is due!

If you're online, you've heard of MySpace. You may already even have a profile. Though MySpace seems to have veered off the social networking course for the context addressed in this lens, there is still a way...and it's oh so fun!

If you spend all day beating the crap out of the internet to find ways to make money and promote your links, articles and pages, then you need a break. The best way to collect MySpace friends is to join apps. The most popular, of course, are Mobsters, Mafia Wars, etc. Get the hang of these apps and they can give you a much deserved 10 minute break, while adding tons and tons of friends to your profile. What's the benefit? Read on...

Though most MySpace people are there to share music, figure out who's a hottie, and play apps, you can still break through with your marketing plans. Join an app, add lots of friends and then post bulletins. This can't really be considered spamming, as long as you don't post 90 in a row, because you're not directly emailing or commenting to anyone. You can do that as well, but it's kind of annoying. So, once you've collected 200 or more friends on MySpace, post a bulletin every several hours pointing people to one of your links. You'll get a few clicks...and every little bit helps! Adding links and blog posts to the MySpace blog is beneficial as well. And don't forget how much fun it is to play Mobsters!!

Facebook is a pretty fun place to be, once you get the hang of it. Social networking on Facebook begins by finding people you know. Swap gifts, superpoke, and post all your great articles, news stories, Squidoo pages, and blogs right to your profile!

Facebook is a little less serious so you can have some fun while you're there. Partake in a little bit of fun by adding an app or two, then post your links and rant about your success! You can also join groups and get great new contacts by participating in discussions.
