Creating A Future That Works ...

"We are never alone ... it just seems that way sometimes."

The whole idea of social systems (and social ontology) revolves around the idea that we create the social realities we share. Essentially we are always deciding what we call real by the agreements and distinctions we make along with others. We could say that reality as we know it only exists in relation to the distinctions and agreements we make together. Quite literally we create much of what we think of as real.

One example would be that we agree that money has vaule. Although the pieces of paper and small discs of metal we call money have little intrinsic value in themselves, we can exchange the for things that have high of intrinsic value ... things like food, shelter and clothing.

Once we understand this process ... that we create much of what we think of as real by our participation ... we can begin to think about what we want to be true for ourselves and those around us. We can begin to make the agreements and distinctions that will allow us to create the kind of world we want to live in together. We can also begin to consider the agreements and distinctions that already exist and prevent us from creating the kind of world we want to live in as well.

The process of creating social realities and bringing them into being by choosing our agreements and the distinctions we engage in with others could be called social ontology. Learning how to operate this process allows you to take an active part in creating the realities we all share.

About jsriggio

Hello I'm, Joseph Riggio, the Lens Master of the Social Systems & Social Ontology Squidoo Lens here and I'd love to see it collect a group of folks who want to make a statement about what could be possible as we evolve the social systems we live, work and play in together.

I'm especially interested in the concepts of social ontology and the models developed by early explorers like Dr. Clare W. Graves and John Searle
