HERE'S WHAT I THINK
Socialism or Capitalism
Many people see the word Socialism either as an evil force or the cure for all people's problems. Among the former, they say socialistic practices are immoral and go against some of the main human values such as freedom. Socialism supporters view it as the only viable way to bring about peaceful progress
This site is about discussing your opinions about the pros and cons about each type of society. From pure capitalism to extreme socialism, and the whole range in between.
My position?
I'm for a balance. So far, no pure capitalist society exists, and attempts to impose economic agendas based on strong free-market principles have ended in disaster bringing no more than misery and unprecedented inequality in wealth distribution.
On the other hand, the countries that are doing better in terms of life quality are those with a healthy balance between both ends of the spectrum.

YOUR TURN!
Tell us your side: Socialist, Capitalist, both?
Have a place in the discussion. Tell us your opinions, ideas, throw your arguments, fears and predictions. Bring us examples from your country or local state, c'mon, enlighten us!

Socialist countries provide the people with the qualities of life they need to survive. Health Care, control financial institutions, unemployment for those unable to find work, Worker's compensation for those injured, children's aid society to find adoptive and care homes for children left homeless or born into families unable to care for them, a military, a police force, an Old Age Security pension, a method of having everyone pay for services for a small portion of their wages. A Capitalistic society is run by the rich for the rich (from what I can see). I am a Canadian, the Government runs a wonderful health care program which does not include a GYM membership or provide huge profits to Insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies. There are waiting times for MRI's which people request for all kinds of silly reasons and obviously have to wait for something to develop or until such time as the machines sit idle. I guarantee you, I came from a large family and the health care has been wonderful. My niece has Cochlear hearing. one brother has been in hospital over 3 months with 3 kinds of cancer, seizures and Parkinsons. His wife stays in the Palliative care with him 24/7. One brother died from heart trauma but his care was excellent. I could go on and on. I hear all these horror stories and when I talk to these people they back down knowing they have a good thing.

there needs to be a maximum wage of one million dollars a year and raise the minimum wage to 12 dollars/ hour--that would strengthen the middle class who are the small business owners--i don't begrudge anyone success but outsourcing jobs and eliminating human capital, so the top one percent can have multi million dollar houses should stop--

Your analysis is correct, but it goes against 50 years of cold war anti-communist propaganda. People hate "socialized medicine," but love medicare. They are simply not prepared to evaluate the question objectively. More or less unrestrained Capitalism got us to the state we're in now. Remember that when Marx coined the term Capitalism it was meant in a pejorative way i.e. "The rich get richer." There's nothing wrong with savings and investment, but labor and innovation must also be rewarded. Destroying the purchasing power of the middle class is economic suicide for an economy that is 70% driven by consumerism. (Which BTW is a stupid product mix to begin with.)

If only we knew... says:
Socialism, in my opinion, reigns superior in enough aspects to say that, if we could choose between the Ideal Socialist government, and the ideal Capitalist government, it should be a common practice that people would pick the socialist one. Socialism is a more humane way of progressing, being as "fair" as possible, and showing where true value is in this world, which is labor. Capitalism, however, is easy to maintain, and no successful socialist government (at least the way Karl Marx envisioned it to be) has ever been maintained. Thus, Capitalism is the more plausible system for the time being. However, socialism is destined to become it's successor as the world understands that we are all in this together as one species, not a hundred different countries fighting against one another.

You're so right. Balance is the most important thing. Whether it's capitalism, or socialism, problems arise when the stress is put on the "ism" part of the word, and dogmatism takes precedence over pragmatism. We need to both to provide basic infrastructure like roads, water and sewage systems, power, education, and health care through the government, (it always amazes me that market fundalmentalists don't realize what communists they are for driving free of charge on the streets that tax dollars have paid for)and insure that we have a healthy economy based on capitalist principles. the two really are not mutually exclusive; we don't have to make a choice between one or the other, we just have to find a complimentary balance of the two.

I say there should be a mix between Socialism and Capitalism. I think the government should provid low cost health care, electricity, heat, and water. The government could have non-profit hospital's where people pay the doctor's hourly wage ext. This could cut health costs traumatically.

I agree, a balance is needed. However, I feel socialism is morally superior to capitalism, if harder to sustain. Under capitalism, true freedom cannot exist because the workers and lower class are slaves of the wealthy, who have more political power.

LeslieBrenner says:
The free market capitalism is not a cure-all for every issue, such as social goals: education, healthcare, national security, etc. For example: Our congressional leaders and armed forces all have socialized medicine. And what I wouldn't give for their healthcare.
Free market economics is also closely associated with laissez-faire economics, which dictates that the government only intervene when the market fails. Under the Bush administration we've seen this economic model give multi-billion dollar handouts of our tax money to Wall Street, while taxpayers are left to fend for themselves. In other words, privatized profits and socialized losses.

absolute free market is not possible, not even the most economically liberal countries have a pure free market system. USA employs protectionist measures at will, but bullies other countries into freeing their markets regardless the impact it may have in their economies

I think that throwing things like values and freedom into the mix doesn't make sense because these are pure economic systems. Capitalism and democracy are far from interchangeable and the same goes for socialism and communism. A good system would be a blending of free markets and also a strong social safety net like many European welfare states have. Take a look at the Finnish model! One of the most productive and simultaneously the most egalitarian countries in the world

Love Freedom is inherrent in all men. Whereas Socialism, seems to be a enforced charity. To blame greed on Capitalism leaves
the problem to a system , neglecting the core of Capitalism itself, self determination. Neither system can legislate honesty.

Socialism is predicated on the notion that the heart of man is good, and so he will share, while capitalism is based on the notion that the heart of man is greedy, and so he will aquire. Observation leads me to believe that the later most acurately describes mankind, I vote for capitalism.

I am a firm believer in the free market. It is self regulating. That does not mean, however, that there will never need to be laws created to direct that free market. There will always be people who try to control the market in unethical ways. If you compare the US economy with the economies of socialist nations, you'll quickly realize that we have the best economy in the world here in the USA. Opportunity abounds for ALL people. I find that the issue has more to do with people not willing to work, taking advantage of the social welfare programs put into place by people on the left.

I am a supporter of a free market. It is the only economic system that does not use coercive force. If you were to bring about socialism in a way that did not coercive anyone then it would be fine in a free market but unlikely. Of course the way technological progress is going we will soon have post-scarcity, where robots do everything and all sapient beings are freed from involuntary work.
