Just what is Social Media about?

What is the buzz about social media?
Why is everyone talking about it?
It is just another fad, or is it here to stay?

It has been around for quite some time - many businesses are using it as a new marketing tool; MNC, SME, even non-profit organizations like churches, museums, schools are implementing this to get closer to their audiences.

Social Media at a Glance

Quick, so what is social media?

As of 30 Aug '09, this is the definition on Wikipedia.
Social media are media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).

As you probably know we are already moving on to Web 3.0 from Web 2.0, websites do not exist to merely provide information like how they worked in the 1990s, it has evolved to exist as cascaded communities, or 'tribes' as how Seth Godin would describe them, exchanging valuable information because people these days do not have enough time and attention to spare.

Social Media

Is not just Facebook - it's a broad category which comprises of a variety of the things listed below....

Power of Social Media

Case Studies

Media plays an important role in our lives; It's one of our important platforms of communication - we breathe it everyday, we rely on them for information.

More than just an aid to enhance interaction, social media has allowed us to, in this hectic lifestyle where we only have 10 seconds to decide if we will read the information we are given, speed up our absorption of news.

Interesting facts shared and compiled by Monty Metzger on Power of Social Media on Slideshare. In his last slide he mentions social media changes the way we think of media and marketing.

Social Media as a Marketing Tool

As mentioned earlier, the powers of social media are endless. Businesses can efficiently use social media to

  • Connect with customers
  • Strengthen customer relationships
  • Understand customer needs
However, with usage of discussion forums where users may hide with an anonymous identity, unsatisfied customers may post criticism, which may or may not be biased, which may damage the reputation of the company.

Taking action to this, a company should always update themselves on the little pockets of conversations that speak about their company, to better fix the problem and seek improvement.

Quotes on Social Media

"Social Networking that matters is helping people archive their goals. Doing it reliably and repeatability so that over time people have an interest in helping you achieve your goals"
- Seth Godin

"What I don't like online is the superficial networking. It doesn't count for anything" (I can say the same thing for real world networking, sitting in a room of people who are just waiting for their turn to speak without really listening or caring what you have to say). - Seth Godin

""Social media is like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it. No one actually knows how. When finally done, there is surprise it's not better." - Avinash Kaushik

"Buying blog/wiki/forum software doesn't mean you're in social media." - Marc Danziger

"Biggest mistake marketers make that are new to social media is to fake it." - Tom Gerace

Blogs

Blogging is primarily used as a medium to dissipate thoughts and opinions, like an online diary, and are also able to communicate information.

Two elements that identify a blog:
  • Reverse-chronological order
  • Comments

Types of Blogs
Personal - diary of an individual about generally their way of life, usually with specific no topic in particular. Not many bloggers have been able to get famous through this. It would be a good way to be updated with friends' lives.

Corporate - aka, boss blog. It can be internal, or external, with the purpose to enhance communication with the community for marketing and, or public relations.

Interest - Site provides useful & updated content of a specific genre of interest, thus valuable.

Advertorials
A term coined with the combination of "advertisement" and "editorial".

Twitter (Micro-Blogging)

zwitschern 2.0 Now we have micro-blogging - blogging made easier to update, either via web, mobile, with a limit of max 140 characters (so just speak to the point!) Some examples are Twitter, Plurk, Fmylife, but mainly focusing on Twitter.

Twitter faces a problem addressing to the majority about its purpose of existence, as discussed in article by SocialMediaToday. "Why would anyone update what they just ate for breakfast or whether someone farted in the lift?" Truth is, it only matters when you are Ashton Kutcher. Otherwise, why would anyone care? Unless you're inviting stalkers.

Uses of Twitter
- You could ask questions and challenge others' opinions for a juicy discussion.
- Just broadcast to whoever who wants to listen.
- You could make money (though I cant guarantee this!)
- You just might get employed by a head hunter.
...or check out this lens, 50 Ways to Use Twitter, or 17 Ways to use Twitter for more!

Pros
  • Exceptionally useful for those with fans - y'know, fans always want to know what they are doing!
  • Direct traffic to your website by notifying them of updates
  • Network with similar minded professionals
  • Notify your audience - new products, updates and announcement

  • Cons
  • As the number of tweets and tweeters increase, it will take a longer time and harder to read quality tweets.

  • If you have an account on Twitter and you wish to get more followers, try reading How To Get More Followers by DianeRayfield.

    Woofer
A spoof, Woofer has been created and positioned as Macroblogging, apparently teasing Twitter. Users are supposed to write at least 1,400 characters for each post.

    Photo/Video Sharing

    Youtube, Flickr, DeviantART

Such communities gather people of similar interests - or 'tribes' Seth Godin would call it.

With ever-increasing connecting speed, video streaming no longer takes hours like it used to. Google saw the potential in Youtube and acquired it.

    Wikis

"Wiki" is a Hawaiian word for "fast".

They emerged with Web 2.0, when information-sharing becomes a collaborated project, a successful one is Wikipedia, with the tagline "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit".
The credibility should always be questioned as open purpose wikis accept all sorts of content without rigid rules as to how the content should be organized.

    Second Life

Second Life is a social network platform used to connect people - although there are people who mistake it being a game like The Sims.
Users create a name and 3D avatar for themselves. In that virtual world, users can explore, meet others to socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another, or travel throughout the world.

Many disputes have risen questioning its purpose.
Many criticisms about Second Life causing social issues have been reported. The average SL user spends 4 hour daily, treating it as a second lease of life to live the life they have wanted but never got to fulfill -which brings them to become addicted, as they fail to differentiate between what's real and virtual.
You wouldn't believe it - sex, gambling exists in the game.

As much as there are people who have become sorely addicted, there are smart people who have been able to make a living out of it, see article - Anshe Chung, Second Life's First Millionaire.

Scary news aside, Second Life can be useful for your business.
It has been proven to be a useful medium for educators.

This is a nice overall picture of social media. I want to add, regarding Twitter, that there are tools out there, including Twitter Search, that help you locate the tweets in the area of interst so you don't have to muddle through the noise in your live feed. I personally like HootSuite and use both groups and search to locate my interest: social media. I have just posted two lenses, one on twitter and one on social media marketing tips and resources. Please visit my tips and give me a star rating if you find the information useful!
