Social Media Marketing also known as SMM is the implementation of a marketing campaign targeted specifically towards online social websites or communities. Examples of social sites that are targeted are MySpace, Flickr, Digg, Netscape and YouTube.
Many community sites have a low tolerance for direct or traditional hard sell marketing techniques, and require a more subtle approach. The most successful SMM campaigns involve and encourage participation from online communities. The ultimate goal of an SMM campaign is to reach a viral marketing stage, where the message is willingly spread to other communities, forums, social websites and email messages.
While most companies use SMM to promote an idea, brand or product, it can also be used in a negative way to discredit or spread an unfavorable message. See reputation management for more information. SMM is also related to Social Media Optimization (SMM)
