First of all, I would like for you to understand that we each have individual purposes for why we choose to social network, therefore how I use a specific social networking site may be remotely close to what you have in mind for now. Regardless, I want you to know the capabilities of these exciting Internet worlds, so that later you can apply anything that you did not understand now. As we all know, our lives can change for the better or worse (God forbid) at any time. As a mompreneur and Internet technology professional, I believe that it is important for you know the Social Marketing advantages you have just in case you want or ever need to begin making money online. With that said, I will begin with a few quick tips on what yo should consider when applying and setting up your account.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SETTING UP YOUR MYSPACE, FACEBOOK OR OTHER SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE CORRECTLY

1) After you apply for an account, most networks will send you a confirmation email. You will bneed to login to your email account, click on that email from the social network, and click on the confirmation link in order to activate your account.

2) Once your account is activated, login and look for the link to manage your account preferences. In this area, there should be a module where you can adjust your privacy settings. This is where you decide whether your would like a public or private profile. Additionally, there is also an area where you can choose how people are permitted to contact you, which of your private details you feel comfortable displaying once you approve a "friend", and if you want the network to email you each time someone sends you a friend request, makes a comment, invites you to a group, etc.

3) Most social networks will also give you the option to customize the link to your page. So, instead of your link looking like this: http://socialnetwork.com/836282 you can change the numbers to your name, your business name or something a little more personal. This way, you remember how to find your page and refer your friends. It is also for others to remember you. Another advantage to this personalized naming feature is that some search engines give preference to particular domain names / urls. If your company sells flavored water, you may want to use that as part of your social networking link.

4) Each network will have an Invite module, where you can enter all of your friends and family members' email addresses and send them an invitation to join you at the network.

5) Many now offer the opportunity to customize your page. You can either use their Microsoft Word type page editor. If you know HTML & CSS, you can make the page a little more attractive with some fancy coding, else there are numerous websites that provide free templates for your Myspace, Facebook, etc.

6) Each social networking site give you the option of whether you want to approve any comments made to your page or just let others post freely. They also permit you to block links and images in those comments. This is important. Whether you have a personal or professional interest, you do not want anyone linking porn, obscene comments and such to your page. Also, many of us prefer that our users stay on our pages longer, and not click a link to go out of the network. If you do not care about either, that is fine. Just know that you have options.

SUMMARY
You and I may differ in how we choose to use a social networking community. If just depend on if our motivation is to purely socialize online with friends, make new acquaintences, use a social networking community as a professional networking site or ALL OF THE ABOVE.
