What is the Social Work Profession?

According to the International Association of Social Workers,

the social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, social work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work.

In other words, social workers help people and their communities find ways to live with dignity in the face of hardship and triumph over adversity where ever they find it.

Who Trains Social Workers?

Ideally Social Workers receive their classroom training in social work courses from professionals who are licensed social workers. Their instructors provide them real world examples as part of the classroom instruction along with assigned readings and activities in textbooks that describe the theory of social work practice, social work policies, and the roles social workers fill in the community.

Social Workers also get trained by social work practitioners in practicum and internship settings where licensed social workers guide them as they learn to use the skills they were taught in the classroom.

By combining classroom instruction and instruction in field settings, social work students have the opportunity to try the methods and techniques that the profession uses. This means the students are able to be observed, guided, and coached so they can become proficient in the application of those skills for the benefit of others.

Where Do Social Workers Get Their Training?

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has established standards for social work educational institutions. Those schools of social work combine classroom instruction with field practicum and field internship learning opportunities.

The courses taught at the CSWE accredited schools of social work cover a variety of topics including training about how to identify the strengths that individuals, families, groups, and communities have. The goals and methods of social work are designed to give a voice to those who have been marginalized and lost their voice in society.

What Are Social Work Ethics?

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) publishes a Code of Ethics. That Code is used by social workers to guide them in their practice. Social Workers commit to using the Code of Ethics to help hem problem solve when they face challenging situations.

Since the Code of Ethics is the Standard of Practice, social workers can turn to it for information that helps them make decisions about the relationships they have with their clients, with their employers, and with other professionals The Code of Ethics tells social workers how to practice within the scope of their training and what to do when they are confronted with circumstances that would put them, their clients, or others at risk.

What's A Social Work Internship Like?

The Successful Internship: Transformation and Empowerment

Amazon Price: $14.98 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

If you're going to earn a degree in social work and pass the test for the social work license, then you're going to have a social work internship. That's where a social worker learns to apply the theories and methods studied in the classroom in real life.

Social work internships allow social work students the opportunity to help others while another, more experienced social worker, guides them in their practice with people, while they learn how to use what they studied in the classroom.

You can learn a lot from books, but you learn different things from helping others. While in an internship, social work students learn how their relationships with their clients are similar to the relationships they have with other people in their lives and they also learn the important differences in those relationships and what those differences mean.

This book shows social work students the importance of those differences and how to use their relationships with more experienced social workers to learn professional roles and skills.

Puppets are important tools for play therapy. They can be used with children or adults who are having difficulty participating in therapy. Skillful use of puppets helps people relax, express emotions they normally avoid, and imagine solutions to problems in relationships.

This book describes how to make puppets and how to use them. While it isn't written for social workers or therapists, it is instructive and helpful to those who want to make their own puppets and learn how to teach their clients how to do it themselves.
