How Did The Smother's Brothers Help Us Evolve?
Came Rowen and Martin's Laugh In, where sexism and homophobia mixed up with nudity jokes and sometimes a little black power was thrown in with an occasional anti-Vietnam joke.
And the title of the show, "Laugh In," was a take off on the "Be-Ins"and "Sit-Ins" that we took part in at Draft Boards, to protest the Vietnam War.
This show was careful not to get too far out of line because of censorship issues experienced by Tommy and Dick Smothers.
Both of these shows were preludes to Saturday Night Live; fast, funny and racey.
These shows made it possible for the concept that we experience today: Anything goes, sometimes for the good and not so good.
But it is what it is.
So "Sock It To Me" with the "Fickle Finger of Fate!!"

Rowan & Martin's Laugh In
Wikepedia Summarizes this show's history thoroughly

- This is a wonderful summary of the Rowan and Martin "Laugh In" show, which many of us watched every week with rapt attention.
It was zany and crazy and off the cuff.
Much of it was improvisation.
So read on!!

Remember Ruth Buzzi?
She was my favorite on this show because she could play so many different characters. She was versatile.
She was beautiful and plain, all at the same time.
All the women on the show were special: Lily Tomlin, Goldy Hawn, Jo Anne Worley and Judy Carne. They were the object of much sexism, but the mood was one of fun and hilarity.
You just had to laugh.
In fact, I am having a great time putting all of this together.
It is teaching me not to take life so seriously!
It is teaching me that a joke has far greater healing potential than a stern lecture about morality!
And the last thing this show was about--was morality!!

- I watched this show as a teenager and sometimes felt uncomfortable with the sexual humor. I enjoyed most of the show though. It wasn't as real somehow as the Smothers Brothers -- more Hollywood feel. Still a blast from the past!

- I remember this show well. It's encouraging, in a way, to think of the type of comments that were acceptable then, but which are not acceptable now. As a culture, we are growing.

- What a wonderful tribute to this outrageously funny show! I don't think I ever missed it back then. You made me laugh today and for that I'm spreading my Angel wings for a blessing.

- You know, you simply must find that lens with the "sock it to me cake" recipe -- I didn't know you had done a lens on Laugh In. BTW, I had recommended that the lensmaster with the cake recipe lens add a particular Laugh In sock it to me with Nixon YouTube to his lens as it made sense to me. Ah, sock it to ME! me-me-me-me !!! ;)
