Sock Monkey Central
The sock monkey has been popular for many decades, possibly a toy your grandparents enjoyed as children, possibly something they now make for your children. My mother makes sock monkeys for all her grandkids... in fact it's the first gift they receive from grandma. When my sister finds out she's expecting, she lets our parents know by ordering a sock monkey!
Since we have two kids of our own, we have a couple monkeys floating around the house. Sometimes we find them with their arms and legs tied in knots, but most of the time they sit sweetly on our children's beds adding a touch of grandma's love to the room.
I'll warn you now... this lens was mainly created for my own amusement and some of these photos are just plain crazy, there's no two ways about it! It's all here, it's all good, it's all monkey.The Midway Village & Museum Center hosted a Sock Monkey Madness Festival earlier this month in Rockford, Illinois. This was the 4th Annual Sock Monkey Festival.
Visit the museum's website and check out their photo gallery for photos of four years of sock monkey madness. By all appearances, these festivals are more fun than a barrel of... well, you know.

Sock Monkey History
A little history behind the socks
According to Wikipedia the creation of the sock monkey dates back between 1910 and the early 1920's, made then from discarded hosiery... although the type and style isn't stated. The earliest documented sock monkey dates back to 1919.The traditional red heeled sock monkey we've come to know and love made it's first appearence in 1932 when the Nelson Knitting Company first started creating red healed socks. By the mid-1950's this sock manufacturer began placing sock monkey instructions with every pair of socks sold. The company eventually acquired a design patent for the sock monkey creation and went on to use the doll in their promotional campaigns. In 1992 the Nelson Knitting Company was acquired by Fox River Mills who still manufactures the socks to this day.
