Sock Puppets For Your Hands
Sock Puppets, to some, may seem very old fashioned. As long as there have been socks, there have been sock puppets.
The truth is that a simple sock puppet in the hands of a creative puppeteer (or should I say "ON the hand" of a creative puppeteer) can be a most rewarding experience for the puppeteer, the audience, and the puppet maker.

Why the fascination with sock puppets?Well, there is clearly something primal about the simplicity of the sock puppet. An everyday inanimate object coming to life, is always a pleasant surprise.
Why is there such appeal with this simplest of dolls?
Maybe it's the same reason why children prefer to play inside the box that the toy came instead of with the actual toy? Or how about the found stick that, through just a little imagination, became the home run bat, or the bad guy scaring gun, or...
(you get the idea)
I think the magic of the sock puppet is not in any
decoration, or
elaborate materials, or
electronic gizmos,
but in the magic that occurs when this simple object becomes alive,
tells a story or
holds a conversation, then (just as magically, turns back into something common and ordinary... a sock.
The thrill in the eyes of a young child who has just befriended a 'sock' is priceless.
So, take off your shoes and socks and make some child's day, will you?
(Actually, you'd probably get better results with a CLEAN SOCK.)
