Beyond the commonality of Coke. Beyond the prevalence of Pepsi. There are hundreds -- thousands -- of historic, regional, and small batch sodas still being made today. Why drink the run of the mill when you can drink something interesting and independent? This lens celebrates the simplicity of soda.
Conundrum in a Can
Mysteries that fizz
Whose idea was it to put Big Red in a can? In a can, it's just cream soda. In a bottle or a clear glass -- it's Big Red.A related conversation:
Me: When you lived in Texas, did you ever drink Big Red?
Rick: All I can remember is that I didn't like it.
Me: Do you like cream soda?
Rick: No.
Me: Well, there you go!
Coke Fiend
Mexican cola finds its way across the border -- and into the hearts of Americans
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Coca-Cola company has finally caught on that Mexican Coke is better than American Coke. The reason why? Mexican Coke is made with cane sugar, not the high-fructose corn syrup used by United States bottlers.Chad Terhune reports that while the product isn't illegal, importing it into the US breaks company guidelines. The company has no plans to introduce a Mexican Coke in the U.S. any time soon, claiming consumers would consider it inauthentic. Hold the phone! Coke started using corn syrup just two decades ago... the original Coke -- the classic Coke -- was made with cane sugar.
Until Coke changes its ways, make mine Kosher-for-Passover Coke or a bottle of Boylan's.

Kosher Coke is the only kind I'll drink. Coke should go back to the "much better than high fructose corn death" formula. :) Posted July 30, 2006 |

A tool you can use to make your own Moxie (almost)
Soda-Club USA's fountain jet home soda maker is a fun -- but not fully functional -- home accoutrement you can use to create your own cola. Basically, the countertop device is designed to carbonate water. Then, you add flavored syrup for the kind of soft drink you want to make, and voila. What I found testing the device is that even if I felt like I was over-carbonating the water, it never ended up bubbly enough. You might consider finding a source of syrups... and merely adding them to seltzer water. This device is intriguing but doesn't entirely deliver. Web Sites That Sizzle
