The Green Cathedral of South Africa; an extraordinary succulent garden.
Soekershof; Private Mazes & Botanical Gardens in South Africa is the original breeding place of the South African cactus trade. In one of the historical gardens the oldest cactus of South Africa (Anno 1910) is still growing strong. The gardens display almost 2500 different succulent plants from all over the world under the open sky instead of under cover of a roof or shade-cloth. It's by far the largest collection of its kind in South Africa.
Next to the huge succulent collection Soekershof is also home of a wide variety of xeroscape (drought tolerant) plants.
The cultivation of plants, both in gardens and nursery, is fully organic.
Soekershof is an unique experience. It's all a botanical garden should be; a place of calmness, relaxation, contemplation and education.
Not a 'botanical garden' with the banter of coffee corners, 'Made in China' craft shops and restaurants. Soekershof is real with exclusively designed crafts and arts created by artists from local less priviliged communities (http://soekershofshop.wordpress.com). Soekershof is certified by Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa (http://www.fairtourismsa.org.za).
One of the projects is 'Land Art Project in South Africa' where local artists are provided with the opportunity to create a Landmark with 'material from the land'. More info about this project: http://soekershoflandart.wordpress.com
General info about Soekershof: http://soekershof.com with on the homepage all relevant data about road directions, times, admission fees, etc. In the 'useful links' section of this website also links to all accommodation in the area with a consistent quality (including hygiene) each in its own market segment.
