Relay Throws

A Fielding Relay involves all team players and emphasizes the need for everyone to throw well. The drill also teaches getting into position for a relay throw as well as quick turn and release of the throw.

Have the players form a line stretching around the outfield, 15 to 20 yards apart. Use several balls, with players throwing a ball to the glove side of the next player in the line. Switch directions at irregular intervals.

Throwing Back Grounders

Grounders are awkward to field, often leaving a player off balance. There are several softball throwing drills you can use to improve throwing in this situation.

One involves having players line up at third base. You, or a batter, hits a grounder to the first player in line. When the player fields it and throws it in, hit a high fly to first.

The player runs to field it and throw it in. Hit another grounder to first for the player to run back for.

This drill develops speed and fielding skills as well as throwing accuracy. You can also speed it up or slow it down to match abilities.

Throwing on Target

Throwing accuracy is at least as important as having a good throwing arm. To help make sure your players' throws are on target, use such softball throwing drills as The Bucket Game.

Divide your team into two groups. Send one group behind a cone at short stop and the other behind a cone at second. Begin by hitting a ground ball to the player at the front of each group. The player fields the ball and tries to throw it into a bucket at home plate.

A ball into the top bucket on one bounce earns one point, and without a bounce two points. Players can charge the ball hard to shorten their throws. Introduce a competitive element by saying the first team to ten points wins.

Throwing Under Pressure

This game simulates he pressure players may throw under in a game. Have two teams who take turns batting. The fielding team groups at second except for one player stationed at third base. Place three balls just past third going home.

When you call 'go', the first player in the batting team runs to first and on to second. The fielder at third collects each ball and throws them a teammate at second. The thrower must make three good throws before the runner reaches second. The 'batting' team wins a point if their runner reaches second first.

Different drills form different skills

Throwing can win - or lose - games. Use all of these softball throwing drills to help make sure your team has the edge in this season's close games.
