What is a Sog You ask?

In the world of my 20 month old grandson, a sog is a garden dweller that hops and eats flies. We have two that spend their days sleeping on our back porch light. Since Joel discovered them, he has been very concerned for their welfare. It's so much fun to see the world through the eyes of a toddler. :0)

Winter Sogs

Explaining nature to a two year old can be challenging...

When you move into a house, you never know what you will find on the grounds. We live in a subdivision but have an owl and a hawk that visit from time to time. This summer, a raccoon was peering at my husband through the sliding glass door. We have relocated innumerable squirrels and rats and also have a couple of black snakes that live somewhere in the shrubbery. Recently an opossum has developed a taste for camphor berries and is making nightly visits to my patio. Quite a bit of livestock for one little yard.

A couple of weeks ago my Grandson Joel discovered the frogs that live on our back porch. When I lifted him up to see them better, he reached out and touched them. They moved and he pulled back with a horrified look on his face. He did his best to avoid them for the rest of that visit. Somehow over the next week, that disgust turned to fascination and now he looks for them every time he comes. The problem is, the weather has turned cold and the frogs have hidden themselves away in the plants so now Joel has become a sog hunter. At least that is what he calls it because he can finally say the letter s but an f still eludes him.

Lost Frogs n Statues to the Rescue

You can't disappoint a little guy can you?

big frog statueWhile his parents were packing to go home today Joel decided that he wanted to go for a walk. Of course Grandma had to tag along. Since we live on a quiet cull-de-sac, I let him lead me down the street. He loves to find flowers to pick to take home to his Mom. We had quite an interesting walk and as we came to the end of the street, he suddenly perked up and said, "Sog, Sog"! He was right, there were three sogs waiting for us there. I have always been a fan of garden statues. I think Joel is going to love them too. In any case, we now know where we can find sogs in winter. :0)

Sogs Update

Since I made this lens, Joel often comes up to Grandma's computer and asks for Sogs.

He loves to see his beloved frogs on the computer screen.

I think he knows that they are right down the street but now he can peek at them when he wants.

Great fun :0)

5/6/09 The weather has turned hot and yesterday I saw a frog back behind the light. I can't wait to show it to Joel!

Soggy Spinach?

So where do you keep your 'sogs'?

Hi Gandree,
Ohh, what a fun lens... your grandson is adorable, and you are blessed to be able to spend time with him! How wise of you to begin to sharpen his computer skills at such an early age; he's destined to be a world class sog expert!

I just know you had to have let that poor little frog out of that salad bag!!!

Such a sweet story. And I love seeing lenses connecting people in the real world, especially from 2 different generations! My 3 year old nephew likes to sit on my lap and check out all our Elmo lenses. (But I think I prefer sogs). Thanks for sharing this, Gandree. -- Megan

I've only seen little "sogs" around here but we have possums, raccoons, a blue heron, crows, flickers, beavers, and an occasional coyote. We live in town!
