The nine Planets of the Solar System

The solar system consists of nine planets, that are all revolving around the sun. Their order, acording to the distance from the sun is: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Beside bigger objects in the Solar System - Planets, there are also two regions, which are populated by smaller objects. The first one is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. These objects are similar to planets, because they are composed of metal and rock, only much smaller.

Outside Neptune's orbit lies objects composed mostly of ices (water, ammonia and methane).

Inside these two regions there are five bigger objects - named also dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.

Terrestrial Planets

Terrestrial PlanetsMercury, to begin with, being the closest to the sun is the hottest. It is also the second smallest and is among a group of planets called 'terrestrials' that are close to the earth and are made of rock.

Next from Mercury is Venus, also a part of the four planets called terrestrials. This planet is relatively hot too and can be very visible from the Earth even with the naked eyes.

After Venus is the Earth in which life thrives. In fact, Earth is the only planet that has been proven to have life. There have been numerous researches on other planets to find even the slightest sign of life, studies that have not born any fruit so far. The Earth is also the only planet with air, something that is due to its gravity.

Next from Earth is the last member of the group of planets named terrestrials, red planet Mars. Scientists have recently being trying to prove that life could also thrive here. This has driven many people to declare that in the future people will indeed be travelling to and fro between Earth and Mars.

Outer Planets

Outer PlanetsFollowing Mars in the solar system is Jupiter which is actually the biggest planet in terms of its diameter. In fact, it is eleven times the size of the Earth.

After Jupiter is Saturn which is the second biggest and the most visible phenomenon in it are the three rings that surround it. These rings are made of rocks, debris and dust and are held on in position by the gravity in Saturn.

Next from Saturn are planets referred to as ice giants. These are namely Uranus and Neptune and have an atmosphere of helium and hydrogen. Their composition is mainly gaseous unlike the terrestrials that are made of rocks. The next and furthest planet from the Sun in the solar system is Pluto, which also happens to be the coldest and the smallest too.
