Solar Toys
It's that time of the year again, and of course kids want toys. After all, what is Christmas without toys? Before you go downtown and fill up a bag full of boring plastic toys that will eventually end up in the landfill, consider another fun and educational choice. Christmas is a perfect time to engage with your children and teach them the importance of being environmentally friendly. Solar toys and toy kits are a perfect way to educate and interact with your kids while having fun. Many of these toys are also made using recycled materials and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood in keeping with the theme of earth friendliness.
The benefits of solar are obvious. Decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels doesn't just make sense for the environment, it makes sense economically. The price of oil is going up with no end in sight and the pollution created by using it contributes to health problems and global warming. I don't want to get all political here, but who can argue with clean air and saving money.
When it comes to toys, giving your kids solar powered ones are great for a number of reasons. First, you won't be buying and quickly throwing away expensive batteries. Even toys with rechargeable batteries require constant charging and may not be ready at all times. I can remember a few Christmases with remote control cars and no batteries! And on Christmas there was no store open to replenish the stock. Oh the troubles of youth! Anyway, solar toys are usually usable even under lighting and can provide lots of fun while teaching your kids about Science and the ways of clean energy.

The Fun
Some of the best Solar Toys are DIY kits. These models can range in price and complexity from simple to challenging. What I think is great about these kits are the fact that you have to build it yourself. There is a great deal of satisfaction and accomplishment from building a kit like this and actually seeing it work for the first time. Some of the more complicated kits may be better for older kids and require adult supervision. Just a really great way to do a project together..Educational Do-It-Yourself Robot Kit $9.20

Another great educational (and Fun) do it yourself Solar Powered Robot Kit. This kit lets you build six different models. You can build and rebuild again. Great for classrooms and science teaching, or just a good way to keep the toy feeling new. Oh yea, did I mention that it never needs batteries?

How Solar Works
Warning: Science Ahead!!
The Science
Solar works by using Photovoltaic (PV) cells that can convert light directly into DC energy current. A PV cell is a semiconducting device consisting mostly of silicone that creates a magnetic field between two oppositely charged layers. When light travels through the layers, an exchange takes place where light (photons) are absorbed while some electrons are freed. These electrons can then flow through the silicon and around an electrical circuit that can then power a device. The cycle is a closed loop and the electrons can return to the PV cell and repeat the process. The process is self-contained and creates no pollution.Solar Powered Car $2.29

The Learning
Many solar toys are ready to go right out of the box. Get them in the light and off you go. This will appeal to kids for obvious reasons. Other toys, come in kits that can be assembled piece by piece and teach kids about the mechanics of building and science. One of the most rewarding experiences you can share with your kids is building something together. Some of my most cherished memories from childhood is just being in the garage with my dad building simple toys and projects. It was never really important what we were making (or if it even worked!) it was just great to spend the time together.
At Christmas time we usually enjoy some time off from work. If you want to spend some quality time and teach your kids about science, take a look at some of these great solar powered toys and toy kits.
Assembling solar toy kits will be a very rewarding experience for a child. Whether it is a simple assemble kit or a more involved build, it makes for a perfect opportunity to engage with your kids in an important conversation about science and the world we live in..
