Solar Homes

Modern times are seeing more and more people creating solar homes - homes which are powered by solar energy instead of by the pollution-generating fossil fuels that cause Global Warming. Solar Power is not more expensive than other less clean forms of energy in the long run. It is only the original installation which is expensive, but it pays itself off eventually with the money that is saved by the use of solar energy instead of other sources of heat and electricity.

Examples of Solar Homes

Modern Solar Homes are employing a variety of methods in order to utilize solar power and alternative energy. In the videos in this lens, you can see examples of some of these solar homes and solutions.

Solar Homes in India

Over 46% of the population of India has no access to normal electricity. Solar power is becoming the solution for 18,000 families in Karnatika, India. Until now, these families had no way to light their homes after dark - other than kerosene and maybe candles.

These means that working or studying after dark was difficult or impossible.

SELCO India, Affordable solar home systems

http://www.ashdenawards.org/winners/selco SELCO won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2005. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog http://ashdenawards.blogspot.com SELCO-India is a private business which has designed and sold over 48,000 solar home systems, powering electric lighting and small appliances for 220,000 people in Karnataka and other states in South India. Around 46% of households in India do not have mains electricity, and for many others the supply is unreliable. The use of photovoltaic (PV) solar-home-systems (SHS) can provide reliable power for lighting and low-power appliances, which brings great practical benefits. Smoky, dangerous kerosene light is avoided, people have extended hours for work and study, and more opportunities for leisure and entertainment. Many programmes throughout the world have attempted to improve quality of life using SHS, but often they have not led to long term use and continuing markets. SELCO-India believes that the use of SHS will become widespread only if the system and after-sales service are of high quality, and if people want an SHS enough to pay for it. What they provide is properly designed and installed systems, excellent on-the-spot service and links to organisations which offer appropriate and affordable finance. The Ashden judges were highly impressed with the philosophy and excellent management within SELCO-India: they have built a thriving business by providing poor people with a high quality product and service.

Another Solar Home in Cold Canada

This solar home is built around the use of solar power, wind power, and custom energy-efficient construction. Even the windows of the house are designed to use the maximum amount of sunlight to heat the home. The walls are specially constructed, and even the soil plays a part.

And what about the winter days of no sunlight in this northern area? They've got that covered too - and the heat is in the flooring!
