Solar Chargers

There are a variety of solar chargers available on the market today. Some can run your equipment directly from the sun, while others will charge batteries which can in turn be used to run or charge your equipment. Some solar chargers have the option of being charged from solar energy or from a different source (such as a wall outlet or vehicle cigarette lighter adapter).

Different solar chargers provide different quantities of electricity and are thus suitable for different types of equipment.

Solar Chargers of Different Capacities

Not all solar chargers are the same. Some can provide enough electricity to power a home, while others only supply enough power for a device as small as an MP3 Player.

There are also different types of solar chargers for different purposes. A solar charger which will work great on your yacht is not necessarily going to be ideal for a mountaineering expedition.

Here you can see some of the different types of solar chargers available on the market today, and what their features and capabilities are.

Sunsei 71015 SE-24000 400-Watt 16.5-Volt Solar Panel Generator

These solar panels can be installed on rooftops of cabins, cottages, RVs or boats. They will produce up to 400 watts and can charge several batteries at the same time. They are designed aerodynamically so as to reduce drag and stand up to high levels of vibration on moving vehicles (such as RVs or boats). Several panels can be connected in seconds, without any need for tools or rewiring. When your solar panel is charging, a built-in indicator blinks to notify you. The long-term energy savings, along with the reduced environmental impact, can be well worth the initial cost.

Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar Panel (Black/Silver, 12 Volt)

If you want to take your laptop or your camera with you on your next off-grid camping trip or other adventure, this foldable solar charger can provide enough electricity to fit the bill.

Brunton's new Solaris 52 Solar Battery Charger uses modern thin film solar technology for efficient charging. It can produce up to 52 watts of electricity, and can charge devices such as laptops, cameras, and even DVD players.

Brunton Flexible Solar Module (14 Watt)

Another device from Brunton is the Brunton SolarRoll. While it doesn't supply quite the same amount of energy as the Brunton Solaris 52 above, 14 watts is not bad either. This one doesn't fold, though - it rolls.

This was the first flexible solar panel ever to be available on the market. It can be stored in a convenient tube and carried easily on top of your backpack. Whether you are using it for a moutaineering expedition or for a family camping trip, it will come in handy, deliveryng enough electricity to run a satellite phone (an essential part of any mountaineer's survival kit), charge a laptop (though not as quickly as the Brunton Solaris 52), or run a video camera.

Several Brunton SolarRolls can be linked together, in order to increase their power output. Brunton SolarRolls are constructed to be both lightweight and durable, and their thin-film solar cells are designed to be effective even in low-light conditions.

The SolarRoll, which measures 12 by 57 inches when open and weighs a mere 17 ounces, includes a battery clamp cable for charging car batteries, along with a vehicle outlet cable and multi-linking cable. It's also backed by a one-year warranty.

Black/Silver Voltaic Solar Panel Backpack

The solar panels installed in the back of this daypack will provide enough energy to charge most portable consumer electronics (though not enough for laptop computers).

Ideal for a weekend hike or a short off-grid excursion, the Voltaic 1001 solar powered backpack has enough pockets connectors to charge several devices at once. The waterproof, scratch resistant, and UV resistant solar panels can generate up to 4 watts of electricity. They are lightweight and tough, designed to withstand rough use. It would be difficult to break one of the solar panels by leaning on the bag, dropping it, etc. But even if you do, the solar cells can be replaced.
