Did you know that the energy policy enacted in 2005 gave homeowners the ability to claim a tax credit of up to $2,000 on their federal tax returns for energy saving improvements made such as (but not limited too) solar electric power and solar water heating?

Later on, in 2008 and after reaching record high oil prices, the federal government passed an extension to the 2005 policy which allowed homeowners to apply for the tax credit up until 2016. And just recently (2009) the 'American Recovery and Reinvestment Act' expanded the benefits to homeowners further by allowing a credit of up to 30% of all costs and eliminated the $2k cap.

  • If you install a solar water heating system for your hot water, at least one-half of the residences hot water must be heated by the new system.

  • You cannot apply for any credits until your system is 100% completed and operational.

1. If you want to start enjoying the benefits of a solar power system right away, you can hire a contractor and have them install it for you and you will be up and running in no time. But be prepared for an initial investment of around $10k to $20k, depending on the size of your house.
