Solar Battery Chargers for your Laptop
Fortunately, the solar energy industry is catching up with the computer industry. It's now more possible than ever to charge your laptop from the sun, while you are traveling or living off-grid.
This lens should give you the basics you need to know, in order to find the solar battery charger that is right for you.
Solar Laptop Chargers
Whereas there were solar panels available that would do the job, they were of such size and weight that they defeated the purpose of even having a laptop to begin with.
After all, if you own a laptop and want to power it with a solar panel, this does imply that you are hoping for a certain amount of mobility. Lugging 50 pounds of solar equipment around does not exactly fit the bill, in my opinion.
But a few years ago, a company called ASC Scientific came out with a product line called Brunton Solaris. This product line consists of units of foldable solar panels.
The Brunton Solaris 6-Watt Foldable Solar Array
The first Brunton Solaris produced only six watts, which was enough to run a cell phone but not enough for a laptop. This one is called the Brunton Solaris 6-Watt Foldable Solar Array.
This solar charger provides enough electricity to power smaller devices, but not laptops.
The Brunton Solaris 12-Watt and 26-Watt Foldable Solar Panels
The Brunton Solaris 26-Watt Foldable Solar Panel was one of the first solar chargers created, that was able to charge a laptop within a few hours (or to slow the battery drain while the laptop was running).
The Brunton Solaris 52 Watt Foldable Solar Array
So, in early 2008, the Brunton Solaris 52 was released.

Providing 52 watts, the Brunton Solaris 52 is probably the best solar charger for laptops on the market today.
The Brunton Solaris 52 is capable of fully recharging your laptop batteries within a reasonable amount of time, so this is definitely a breakthrough.
This still leaves a few problems and inconveniences, however. First of all, as the weather does change, you are not always guaranteed to have ideal charging conditions. And it charging a laptop late in the day can pose a problem, since evenings tend to be periods of low light.
Furthermore, while I might want my solar panel to collect solar energy, that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to sit next to it collecting solar energy myself (in the form of a sunburn). So how do I get around this?
Well the Brunton Solo Power Battery was just released.
The Brunton Solo Power Battery
This leaves you with several options. You can recharge or run your laptop directly from the Solo Power Battery, at any time. You don't need to sit next to your solar panels while you are charging your equipment. You can also recharge your battery back-up during the day (using the solar panel), and recharge your laptop during the night, from your Solo Power Battery.
An additional advantage of the Solo Power Battery is that it can be recharged from a regular wall socket or from the cigarette-lighter socket of your vehicle.
With these three power options available (solar power, vehicle, or wall socket) you are not likely to be stuck without power, in any situation.
I've focused mainly on the use of solar power to keep laptops running in off-grid situations. But the addition of the Solo Power Battery to any setup makes for solutions to just about any power situation.
Even if you don't need solar energy, you might still use the Solo Power Battery by itself. You could recharge it from a vehicle or from a wall socket, and then use it to add several hours of running-time to your laptop when you are away from your vehicle and not near a power outlet. This might work for a day at the beach or at the park, for example, should you choose to keep working on your computer while your kids play in the grass or the waves.
Of course this solution is by no means limited to laptops. This set-up can provide virtually unlimited power for a cell phone or satellite phone, as well as a host of other gadgets you might need to operate in the field.

Laptop Solar Chargers
Here you can find some of the solar chargers which are strong enough to charge or run a laptop.
Remember, if you are looking for a battery charger capable of charging your laptop, you should probably not get anything which provides less than 25 watts. A lower wattage device might work, but it will take a long time for it to charge your laptop.
The Brunton Solaris 52 above is the best option for a laptop, in terms of the amount of power it will generate while still being portable. It is, however, one of the more expensive portable solar power options available. If you want something lighter and less expensive, which will take longer to charge your laptop, you could try one of the lower wattage devices.

- Very interesting lens, I'm actually thinking of getting solar powered back up for my laptop. I have always been a fan of clean and green energy solutions, but it has been hard finding something powerful enough to run laptops up to now. And sitting next to a noisy generator is hard on your concentration.
