Solar Panel Cost

Sunforce solar panels are becoming more and more popular now that energy costs keep on rising. However, one problem that has worried many home owners interested in installing solar panels has been the high cost of solar energy. When I first thought of installing solar panels a few years back, I did an online search to calculate what I could save on my energy bills. What really shocked me was the incredibly high cost of installing the solar panels. By the time the energy savings covered the installation costs, I would have already sold my house to live in a retirement home! There had to be a better way to utilize solar power and, fortunately, I have stumbled across it.

Before I go on about a much cheaper way of harnessing solar energy, let me quickly explain what solar panels are exactly. A solar panel is simply an interconnected package of solar cells contained in a frame and usually protected by a glass cover. Modern solar panels have come a long way with improved manufacturing techniques and lower cost materials reducing the price considerably from what they were a few years ago. There are essentially two types of solar panel systems. The most common one is the solar water heating units and then there are the photovoltaic (PV) panels. The good news is that you no longer have to buy these solar panels from specialized retailers and installers but can get order them online.

Solar water heating can reduce your water heating bills by at least half. Most solar panels you see on the roofs of homes are for just heating the water for use in that home. Solar water heating panels can be either flat plate or evacuated tubes. The evacuated tubes are smaller, yet generate the same amount of hot water as does the same area of flat plate panels. A home solar water heating system would consist of the solar water heating panels and a drain back system for draining water from the panel when the pump is not running. This drain back system is to prevent the water in the solar panel from either freezing or boiling inside the solar panel. If you are considering installing a solar water heating system, a rough guide would be one square meter of panel for every person living in the house. Each meter of panel will need about 50 liters of water tank volume. Remember that these systems only provide hot water, and not electricity, so if you are wanting to generate electricity then you need a PV solar panel installed.

Electricity Generating Solar Panels

Photovoltaic solar panels actually generate electricity rather than just heat water. The amount of electricity generated depends on the amount of sun falling on the panels. If the panels are shaded by trees or other buildings for part of the day, then less electricity will be generated. There are two types of PV panels - amorphous and crystalline. Both are made from silicon, but the crystalline cells tend to have a longer lifetime that the amorphous cells. The big advantage of the amorphous cells, however, is the low cost per Watt of electricity generated.

You need to calculate how much electricity you want to generate so you can work out how many panels you need to install. The efficiency of the solar panels is directly proportional to the climate and the number of solar light hours. Your roof also needs to be strong enough to carry the weight of the solar panels. The advantages of having solar panels on your roof are that your household electricity bill will be slashed, and once the panels have been installed, your solar energy is clean, plentiful and free. If there is any excess electricity generated, this can be sold back to the national grid. By generating your own solar energy, you get to decide whether to disconnect your home entirely from the grid or remain connected and sell power back to your electricity company.

Homemade Solar Panels

The Sunforce solar panels are some of the most popular panels for water heating and electricity generation. They are sold by many of the top retailers and are reasonably priced. If you are serious about eliminating your household electricity costs, without forking out the high cost of the panels and installation, there is another, much simpler and cheaper, option for you. Many home owners are building their very own solar panel system for, you won't believe it, under $ 200 for the materials bought at your local hardware store. I know of a very reasonable instructional course that shows you, step by step, how to build and install your own solar electricity generation system for less than the cost of one purchased solar panel. Not only can you run your home appliances of free solar power, but as it is portable, you can even take it with you when you go camping.

If you find that store-bought solar panels are a bit too pricey, then consider building your own solar panel system. For further information, just visit Build Your Own Solar Panels.
