Module 5: Colonial Soldiers

The French-Indian war had cost England a great deal of money and Parliament decided it was time for the Colonies to contribute. To raise money, the British put taxes on items such as sugar, newspapers and tea. The colonists believed that Britain had no right to tax them without their consent. Since the colonists did not have a vote in the British Parliament they believed that *taxation without representation* was not acceptable. Britain sent soldiers to Boston to enforce the taxes and make people buy the products. On March 5, 1770 a scuffle between soldiers and colonists turned deadly when the British soldiers fired into a crowd. This became the first step towards American Revolution.
