Colonial - Soldiers Through Time Unit Study 5

The French-Indian war had cost England a great deal of money and Parliament decided it was time for the Colonies to contribute. To raise money, the British put taxes on items such as sugar, newspapers and tea. The colonists believed that Britain had no right to tax them without their consent. Since the colonists did not have a vote in the British Parliament they believed that *taxation without representation* was not acceptable. Britain sent soldiers to Boston to enforce the taxes and make people buy the products.On March 5, 1770 a scuffle between soldiers and colonists turned deadly when the British soldiers fired into a crowd. This became the first step towards American Revolution.

The soldiers in the Colonial Era used several different kinds of weapons. The British "Brown Bess" and the French "Charleyville were the main weapons used from the 1730s until the end of the American Revolution.

The Declaration of Independence says "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." However, this was not the case for men who were slaves. Not all of the States agreed with slavery and as each new state joined the Union the debate about slavery was fought.

In 1844 Samuel Morse created a way to send coded messages from one location to another using an electromagnetic current with the telegraph. Another form of communication on the battlefield was wig-wag.

On January 1, 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This policy would allow freedom for the slaves of America. On April 18, 1865, the Civil War ended with the surrender of the Confederate army.
