Got a Bad Cat?

Be patient with your new pet!

Here is an article at catsinternational with some alarming statistics. According to this site, 50-70 percent of the animals in shelters are there because of a behavior problem.

Solving a cat behavior problem often takes time and understanding. Regrettably, many owners will take the easy way out and give their cat to the pound.

I am well aware of the challenges that many new pet owners face. Our cat had many problems that we worked through and overcame. If I can say one thing to all problem cat owners, it would have to be; "Please, give your cat a break!"

Your cats been through a lot, be patient with your pet and learn how to work with their disposition. Problem pets have the potential to develop a deep bond with their owners that is greater than many "normal" pets. Give them time and understanding and you'll be glad you did!

Our Cat Was Not Using The Litter Box

Problem and Solution

Our cat Moki, only wanted to use his litter box about 50% of the time. This had become a serious behavior problem!

We discovered the reason was mainly because of an unclean restroom. At first, we cleaned the clumps out every two days or so, but soon discovered this was nowhere near enough!

We began to clean it out twice daily and this seemed to do the trick for the most part. However, he would still occasionally not use his litter box. It was a lot of work to clean so often and frustrating to say the least!

We then decided to try using a kitty litter with larger pieces. Our cat seemed to prefer this because we had virtually no problems. We went back to cleaning the litter box out once a day, then gradually once every two days.

Low and behold, he stopped using his litter box again! To combat this, we started cleaning the clumps out twice a day. When we gradually went back to a once a day schedule the problem started up again.

Unfortunately, both of Moki's owners can't be there to change his litter box immediately after use. This seemed to be the only thing that worked! He's a picky cat when it comes to his restroom, we couldn't change that!

Eventually we came up with a solution. We tried using 2 litter-boxes that we clean once every day. We placed them right next to each other and so far we haven't had any unpleasant SURPRISES!

Our cat will sometimes use the litter box after it's been used one time, but the majority of the time he will avoid it. Buying another cheap litter box was a good solution for him and us. It was a whole lot better than coming home finding things in the closet.

So you want to buy a cat or kitten?

Here are some things to consider

Finding a new a cat or kitten is a decision that should involve the whole family. Get everyone together and head down to your local humane society. If you already have pets, bring them along too! It is a good idea to see how new cats and kittens will interact with your current pets.

Also, consider the costs of your newfound friend. In addition to the adoption fee there are veterinary costs. Your new feline will need their shots and they may need a bath (let a professional do this). Your cat will also need pet supply items in addition to the cost of food and kitty litter. Consider things like food dishes, scratch posts, beds, brushes, and toys.

When we bought our cat we spent about $250.00 after all was said and done. The cost of veterinary bills and pet supplies, it can really ad up, even when you go the cheaper route! In addition, we also spend about $35 per month on food and kitty litter. The cost of owning a cat is not too expensive, but it's not free either.

That said, we love our cat. We made sure to give him a good home by including every family member in our decision. Choosing the right feline as a group, makes an easier transition for the cat as well as for the family.

About brajoh

We love animals and especially cats! We got our most recent cat because of our apartment living situation. Even though I grew up as a "dog" person, I'm glad we have a cat.

Cats make great pets, even when they have behavior problems. I'm surprized at how much I've grown attached to our cat, Moki
