Possibly the most popular fruit in the world

Of all the fruits in history, the apple was probably the most depended upon in Western culture for desserts, jellies, salads, and sauce. Today we welcome new ideas as to how apples may be used because we never tire of this fruit so rich in good nutrition and long growing seasons.

The apple tree is perhaps the oldest tree to be cultivated, with its history stretching thousands of years into Turkey and Asia. Today the United States is the second largest producer of apples in the world, behind China.

This lens will highlight some fun ways to showcase apples in your cooking.

Frosted Apples

Photo by sleepyneko on FlickrFrosted apples are a variation of the usual baked apple. Choose six large red apples, core and blanch them in boiling water so the skins may be removed easily. Peel and dip each apple in melted butter, roll in sugar, then roll in grated coconut.

Fill the centers with chopped dates or nuts (or both). Bake until tender in a 325 degree oven or until sugar sparkles- usually about 15-20 minutes.

Crock-pot Apple Sauce

Some day when you have little time to bake try this delicious apple sauce. Peel, core, and chop 8-9 apples and place them into a crock pot. Add 1/2 cup of water and 2-3 TB of lemon juice. You may add cinnamon, sugar, or any other flavor to suit your taste.

Apple Pie

What is more American than apple pie? According to Alton Brown, the early Americans would not have added cinnamon, cloves, or other spiced to their apple pies. They probably didn't include sugar either, as it was very expensive and hard to find.

Apple accessories for your kitchen

If you will be working with a lot of apples it is always nice to have a few special tools. At the very least you should have an apple corer to speed things up for pies and sauces. If you want to process even faster, try a peeler/slicer/corer tool. Kids love to help out cranking the handle and watching the peels come off! The simple apple slicer works great for pies and snacks.

What is your favorite apple recipe?

Apples are our favorite fruits. One of our favorite apple recipes is Apple Butter from my great, great, great grandmother's recipe. Apple Trees descended from her apple trees still grow on our land and this year were spectacular. Which is your family's favorite apple recipe?

I think we would have to say Crock-pot Apple Sauce. I make mine extra chunky with some lemon juice and just a hint of brown sugar. The flavor of the apples just pop!
