Food, Glorious Food

"Magical food, Wonderful food, Marvellous food, Fabulous food"

"Food, Glorious Food" is from the Broadway musical and the film "Oliver." It is the opening song, sung when the boys from the workhouse are getting their daily gruel and are fantasizing about having "real food" to eat.

"Shortnin' Bread

Folk song

Who doesn't remember the song "Shortnin' Bread"? We usually think of it as a southern plantation song, but it was originally written by James Whitcomb Riley in 1900 and republished as a folk song in 1915. The chorus goes:

Mammy's little baby loves short'nin', short'nin',
Mammy's little baby loves short'nin' bread

Shortening bread is a fried batter bread that tastes similar to butter cookies. It is made with corn meal, flour, hot water, eggs, baking powder, milk and shortening.

LOLLIPOP (1958) by the Chordettes

This song uses the lollipop more as a metaphor for her sweetheart than as actual food, but it's such a classic and so much fun that I'm including it anyway. Enjoy!

"Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie

Where you can get anything you want!

This list of songs about food wouldn't be complete without giving special mention to that 60's favorite by Arlo Guthrie, "Alice's Restaurant." This song tells of the events one Thanksgiving Day in 1965. It is about restaurant-owner Alice M. Brock, about the war in Vietnam and about the draft, and about how 18 year old Arlo Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins, who was 19, got arrested for illegally dumping some of Alice's garbage after discovering that the town dump was closed for the holiday. Alice's Restaurant is a satirical, first-person account of 1960s counterculture, and in this case, food takes a back seat to the issues of that November day in 1965. Nonetheless, the restaurant was the setting for this important song about life in the sixties.

I played one of the workhouse boys in our high school musical of Oliver, so I remember that song well. And you are right, Alice's Restaurant is a must, although there isn't much food in it. Lot of trash though.

Thanks for your comment grannysage! "Food Glorious Food" from Oliver is a classic and once you hear it, you don't forget it. LOL And you are right abut "Alice's Restaurant," but I consider it a classic also and as you indicated, it too is a must in its own way! ;)
