Singing in Music and Song - Let's Sing!

Singing soothes the soul, lifts the spirit and brings people together. It has the power to both bring back memories and create new ones, and it is little wonder that a number of songs have been written about singing.

I've been blessed with the opportunity to sing - I've enjoyed singing since I was about three or four years old, and was introduced to a variety of musical genres at an early age. As a child, I had the opportunity to listen to music from around the world, and that experience has definitely become a part of who I am today. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to sing for and with others fairly often, as my husband and I sing regularly in seniors' residences and nursing homes. We also often sing at family gatherings.

The songs about singing that I've selected to feature are: Sing, Singin' in the Rain, Song Sung Blue, Sing for Your Supper, and Do-Re-Mi. I've also included quotes on singing as well as resources on the benefits of singing and how to sing and improve your voice.

Happy listening!

Sing...Sing a Song...

The Carpenters (Karen and Richard Carpenter)

This fun, catchy song was written by Joe Raposo as a song for the children's show "Sesame Street". It was later made popular by singers/musicians The Carpenters, comprised of Richard and Karen Carpenter, a brother/sister duo. They included it in their "Now & Then" album, with Karen singing the lead vocals.
This song is also referred to as "Sing, Sing a Song", and was performed by numerous guests on the "Sesame Street Show". It was also included in many "Sesame Street" recordings.

Singin' in the Rain

Singing and Dancing in the Rain - Gene Kelly

"Singin' in the Rain" was written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, and has been performed and recorded by a number of artists. It is best remembered as the title song of the 1952 movie of the same name, with actor/singer/dancer Gene Kelly performing a memorable song and dance number in the rain. Enjoy - this is a fun video!

Song Sung Blue

Neil Diamond

This ever-popular Neil Diamond song was first released as part of his "Moods" album. This video is a live performance of Neil Diamond singing this masterfully crafted song. Although "Song Sung Blue" has been recorded by other artists, Neil's version is a classic and you can't help but sing along. Enjoy!

Sing for Your Supper

The Mamas and Papas

"Sing for Your Supper" was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and was part of a broadway musical, "The Boys from Syracuse". It has been recorded by a number of artists, but I've always considered The Mamas and Papas' version, with Cass Elliot belting out the the lead vocals, to be "the version".

Do-Re-Mi

Doe a Deer - Julie Andrews

This fun song from "The Sound of Music" was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and is sometimes referred to as "Doe a Deer". In the movie, the character of Maria von Trapp, played by Julie Andrews, uses this song to teach the von Trapp children how to sing. This video is a clip from the movie, during which Maria and the von Trapp children are up in the Alps surrounding Salzburg, Austria, and the children are first introduced to singing. "The Sound of Music" ranks very high on my list of favorite musicals.
